Product Description

Aileron means 'little wing'. The stripes, angled from the shawl spine, resemble long feathers in a bird's wings.

Aileron starts with a triangle worked in short rows before short row sections keep the angled striping pattern. An icord edge, worked simultaneously with the shawl shaping, gives the semicircular shape a strong finish. Worked entirely in garter stitch, this is a fun knit with lots of little details.

Love the yarn for Aileron? Aileron is the result of a collaboration with Juno Fibre Arts to launch their newest yarn, Milly Sleek Singles.

Kits for Aileron and Milly Sleek Singles will feature in the JFA July update on Etsy.

I have created a number of instructional videos for the set up triangle: [Aileron shawl instruction videos][3]

Aileron Knit Shawl Pattern by Dieuwke Schack-Mulligen

Design Overview

Aileron, meaning "little wing," is an intermediate-level knit shawl pattern that captures the aesthetic of bird feathers through its distinctive angled striping. The design features stripes that radiate from the shawl spine, creating a visual effect reminiscent of long feathers in a bird's wings. This downloadable PDF pattern offers knitters a semicircular shawl with thoughtful construction details and versatile colorway options.

Construction Technique

The Aileron shawl begins with a triangle worked using short rows, establishing the foundational shape. Short row sections continue throughout the pattern, maintaining the angled striping pattern that defines the design. An i-cord edge is worked simultaneously with the shawl shaping, providing a strong and polished finish to the semicircular form. This integrated edging technique adds both structural integrity and visual refinement to the completed garment.

Stitches and Stitch Work

The entire shawl is worked exclusively in garter stitch, making this an accessible yet engaging knit despite its intermediate difficulty level. The repetitive nature of garter stitch creates a textured fabric while allowing the color work and shaping details to take center stage. The combination of short rows and garter stitch produces the characteristic angled stripe effect that gives the shawl its feather-like appearance.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern calls for Juno FibreArts Milly Sleek Singles, a luxurious yarn blend containing 70% Merino wool and 30% silk. Each skein provides 400 meters of yardage and weighs 100 grams. The pattern requires 2 skeins total: one main color (MC) and one contrast color (CC). The original sample uses Glimmer as the main color (nearly one full skein) and Geranium as the contrast color (approximately 75 grams of the 100-gram skein).

Color Work Options

The two-color construction offers significant creative flexibility. Knitters can choose between subtle colorway combinations using Juno FibreArts signature colorways for a more understated aesthetic, or pair a muted base color with a bold contrast color for increased visual impact. The pattern accommodates two approaches to managing the resting yarn during color changes: knitters may cut the yarn after each contrast stripe, or carry the inactive yarn along the edge for a more efficient working method.

Pattern Characteristics

  • Intermediate difficulty level suitable for knitters with foundational skills
  • Semicircular shawl shape with integrated i-cord edging
  • Short row construction throughout for angled stripe patterning
  • Garter stitch texture worked entirely in two colors
  • Requires standard knitting needles appropriate to yarn weight
  • Downloadable PDF format for immediate access and printing

Design Appeal

Aileron combines functional shaping with artistic detail, making it an engaging project for intermediate knitters seeking to expand their technical skills. The short row technique and simultaneous i-cord edging provide satisfying construction challenges, while the garter stitch base keeps the pattern approachable. The feather-inspired striping and luxurious Merino-silk yarn blend create a finished shawl suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions.
