Product Description
...against all odds (Max) is worked seamlessly from the top down. First the neck is shaped by working short rows back and forth and then the yoke is joined to work in the round. The yoke is worked using a modified version of the contiguous set-in-sleeves method developed by Susie Myers (SusieM on ravelry). When the yoke shaping is complete, the sleeve sts are placed on hold and the underarm sts are cast on, using your preferred cast on method. The body is worked in the round to the ribbing. Then sleeve sts are picked up again to work the sleeves top down in the round to the end. As this jumper is worked from the top down it is advisable to try it on from time to time to check the length and overall fit. The length and width of the yoke are easily adjustable by adding/ reducing increases, or adding/ reducing underarm sts.
The sample is shown in Colourmart 3/15 merino/cotton. A suggested substitute is shown below.
…against all odds (Max) by Isabell Kraemer
Garment Overview
…against all odds (Max) is a handknit sweater design created by independent designer Isabell Kraemer. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a finished garment available in seven size options, making it suitable for various body measurements. The design features a sophisticated color-work approach using three distinct yarn colors to create visual interest and depth throughout the piece.
Construction Techniques
This sweater is constructed using knitting as the primary craft. The garment is worked primarily in the round using circular needles, which is a common modern technique for creating seamless or minimal-seam sweaters. The body is worked on a 24-inch circular needle, while the sleeves are completed using either double-pointed needles (DPNs) or the magic loop method on a longer circular needle. This construction method allows for efficient knitting and reduces finishing work.
The design incorporates ribbing at the body and cuffs, which is created using a smaller needle size (US 3 / 3.25 mm) compared to the main fabric (US 4 / 3.5 mm). This technique creates elastic, fitted edges that help the sweater maintain its shape during wear and washing.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the sweater employs color-work knitting techniques. The use of three separate yarn colors (yellow, blue, and olive green) suggests the pattern incorporates stranded colorwork or intarsia methods to create the design. Ribbing stitches are used for the fitted edges, providing both structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for light fingering weight yarn, which is a delicate yarn weight suitable for creating refined, detailed garments. The design was originally shown in Colourmart 3/15 merino and cotton blend yarn, which combines the breathability and softness of cotton with the elasticity and warmth of merino wool.
Yarn requirements vary by size:
- Color 1 (Yellow): 140 to 220 yards depending on size [130 to 200 meters]
- Color 2 (Blue): 28 to 42 yards depending on size [25 to 38 meters]
- Color 3 (Olive Green): 845 to 1,238 yards depending on size [775 to 1,135 meters]
The pattern notes that yarn amounts are estimates and may vary when substituting different yarns, allowing knitters flexibility in fiber choices while maintaining the intended garment proportions.
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires two sizes of circular needles and additional needle options for sleeve construction:
- US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needle: 24 inches long for working the main body fabric
- US 3 (3.25 mm) circular needle: 24 inches long for ribbing sections on the body
- DPNs or longer circular needle: For sleeve construction using either traditional double-pointed needles or the magic loop technique
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, indicating it is suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. Knitters should be comfortable with circular needle construction, color-work techniques, and garment shaping before beginning this project.
