The Abu Dhabi Soft is a classic, unstructured cardigan designed by independent designer Meiju Kallio. This versatile wardrobe staple features a simple silhouette with no body shaping, making it flattering for most body types and easy to pair with various outfits. The cardigan is available in seven sizes ranging from XS to XXXL, accommodating bust measurements from 30 inches (75 cm) to 54 inches (135 cm).
The cardigan incorporates sporty purl lines on the sleeves and along the sides of the body piece, adding subtle visual interest to an otherwise minimalist design. The garment is constructed using a top-down knitting method, beginning with the back piece, progressing to the front yoke pieces, and then joining all pieces together to work the body section. This construction technique allows knitters to easily adjust the finished length of the cardigan according to personal preference. Sleeve stitches are picked up from the armholes, completing the seamless construction approach.
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental techniques suitable for experienced knitters. The primary construction method is top-down knitting, which provides flexibility in garment length and fit adjustments. The design features purl stitches worked into the fabric to create the decorative sporty lines on the sleeves and body sides. The use of picked-up stitches for the sleeves demonstrates proficiency with this essential knitting technique, allowing seamless integration of sleeve caps into the armhole openings.
The Abu Dhabi Soft is designed to be knitted with Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light, a premium yarn composed of 100% Merino Wool. Each skein provides 420 yards (384 meters) and weighs 100 grams. The pattern calls for a 4-ply yarn weight, which creates a fabric with excellent drape and breathability ideal for a versatile cardigan. Yarn requirements vary by size: XS, S, and M sizes require approximately 3 skeins, while L, XL, and XXL sizes need 4 skeins, and XXXL requires 5 skeins. Knitters will need appropriate needles suitable for 4-ply yarn weight to achieve the correct gauge and fabric characteristics.
