Product Description
The Above Tree Line Hat is a nice and thick, super warm hat that is knit using my Barrel Stitch pattern. You can see the stitches look like little barrels. It’s an easy stitch to master and creates a thick fabric that will keep your head warm when you’re up on the mountain…above tree line.
The hat is knit on any 3/8” gauge loom with 72 pegs (like the All N One loom or KB’s Premium Hat loom) and uses approximately 300 yards of Red Heart’s Hygge yarn (a bulky 5).
This pattern is suitable for a confident beginner loom knitter. You only need to know how to e-wrap knit and how to purl.
Above Tree Line Hat by Dayna Scoles Designs
What is Being Made
The Above Tree Line Hat is a loom-knit hat designed by Dayna Scoles. This project creates a finished hat using loom knitting techniques on a round loom, resulting in a cozy, textured accessory suitable for cold weather wear.
Loom and Tools
This hat is created using a 3/8" gauge round loom with 72 pegs, such as the All N One loom or Knitting Board's Premium Hat loom. The designer notes that this pattern is adaptable and can be worked on any gauge loom with any number of pegs, provided you use the appropriate weight yarn for that specific loom.
Techniques Used
The Above Tree Line Hat employs the Barrel Stitch, a distinctive stitch pattern created by the designer. This technique involves a four-row repeat that creates a textured, dimensional effect:
- E-wrap the indicated pegs in a row and leave those stitches sitting on the pegs without knitting over them
- Repeat the e-wrap and leave process for the next two rows, building up three loops on each peg
- On the fourth row, purl all three loops on each peg as though they were a single loop
This simple yet effective technique creates the characteristic barrel texture that gives the hat its visual interest and name.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental loom knitting stitches:
- E-wrap knit stitch (k) – the primary building stitch for the barrel texture
- Purl stitch (p) – used to complete the barrel stitch repeat by purling multiple loops together
- E-wrap and leave (ew) – the key technique that allows loops to accumulate on pegs before being worked together
Materials
The Above Tree Line Hat requires 300 yards of chunky or bulky weight yarn. The sample shown was created using Red Heart Hyggee in the Powder colorway, which is a bulky [5] weight yarn. This yarn weight is ideal for creating a warm, quick-to-knit hat with excellent drape and texture.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as beginner-friendly. While the Barrel Stitch may appear complex at first glance, the designer emphasizes that it is straightforward once you establish the rhythm of the four-row repeat. The basic e-wrap and purl stitches are fundamental loom knitting techniques accessible to those new to the craft.
