Abellio Cable Pullover by Meiju Kallio
What is Being Made
Abellio is a seamless cable pullover sweater designed by independent knitwear designer Meiju Kallio. This advanced-level knitting project features an addictive cable pattern with a purl twist throughout the garment. The pullover is available in an extensive range of sizes, from XS to 5XL, making it accessible to various body measurements from 30 inches to 62 inches bust circumference. The body length can be easily customized and modified according to individual preference, allowing knitters to adjust the finished garment to their desired proportions.
Construction and Techniques
The Abellio pullover is constructed using a seamless top-down method, which means knitting begins at the neckline and progresses downward to the hem. This construction approach eliminates the need for seaming and provides a more integrated, professional finish. The garment features raglan yoke shaping, a classic sweater construction technique where the sleeve cap is shaped with gradual increases that create diagonal lines from the neckline to the underarms. The raglan yoke provides excellent fit and mobility in the shoulders and upper arms. Sleeve shaping is incorporated throughout the construction to ensure proper sleeve cap ease and a tailored appearance.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The defining feature of the Abellio sweater is its cable pattern with a purl twist. Cable stitches are created by crossing groups of stitches over one another to form raised, twisted rope-like textures on the fabric surface. The incorporation of purl stitches within and around the cable pattern adds visual contrast and depth, creating a sophisticated textural design. The purl twist element enhances the dimensional quality of the cables, making them stand out prominently against the background fabric. This stitch combination requires advanced knitting skills and attention to stitch manipulation.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Abellio pattern is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn weight that creates fabric with excellent drape and stitch definition ideal for displaying cable patterns. The recommended yarn is Madelinetosh Tosh DK, which is composed of 100% merino wool. This natural fiber provides softness, breathability, and elasticity perfect for a fitted pullover sweater. Each skein of Tosh DK contains 115 grams and yields 225 yards (205 meters) of knittable length. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from approximately 1030 yards for the smallest sizes up to 2335 yards for the largest 5XL size, requiring between 5 and 11 skeins depending on the chosen size.
