Pattern Summary: Parapet Men's Pullover Jumper – Design #960 by Julie Turjoman
The Parapet is a classic men's pullover jumper knitting pattern designed by Julie Turjoman, worked in Valley Yarns Berkshire Bulky. This is a straightforward, satisfying project that delivers rugged, warm, and handsome results — making it an ideal choice for knitters who want a well-constructed men's sweater without overwhelming complexity. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF.
What Is Being Made
The finished project is a men's adult pullover jumper featuring an allover box-rib stitch texture throughout the body and sleeves. It has a classic, timeless aesthetic — soft, lofty, and warm — described in the pattern as having rugged good looks that are light but toasty. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in Size 42" chest, and the pattern offers a generous range of finished chest measurements:
- 36¾, 39¼, 42, 47¼, 50, 55¼, 58, and 63¼ inches
This wide size range makes the Parapet suitable for a broad spectrum of men's builds, from smaller to larger frames.
Construction Techniques
The Parapet is constructed using a traditional pieced, seamed method, meaning the garment pieces — typically the front, back, and sleeves — are worked separately and then joined together using seaming techniques. This approach is sometimes called worked flat or flat construction, and it is worked bottom-up, beginning at the lower edges and working upward toward the shoulders and neckline.
- Bottom-up construction: Each piece starts at the cast-on edge and progresses upward, giving knitters clear, logical shaping milestones along the way.
- Worked flat (back and forth): Rather than knitting in the round, the pieces are knitted back and forth in rows on circular needles, which is a familiar method for many beginner and intermediate knitters.
- Seamed finishing: Once all pieces are complete, they are joined using a tapestry needle and seaming techniques such as mattress stitch, creating a structured, durable garment with clean edges.
This classic pieced construction is widely considered an excellent method for learning how a sweater is assembled, making the Parapet a highly recommended first sweater project for newer knitters ready to step up from smaller items.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern throughout the Parapet is the Box Stitch, an allover textured stitch that creates a subtle, structured grid-like ribbed appearance across the fabric. Box stitch is a variation of ribbing that alternates knit and purl stitches in a balanced, repeating block pattern, resulting in a fabric that has both visual interest and a pleasing, slightly elastic hand. It is more decorative than plain stockinette but remains very approachable for beginner knitters.
- Box Stitch: The signature allover texture of this pattern, used throughout the body and sleeves for a cohesive, masculine look.
- Standard knit and purl combinations are the foundation of this stitch, making it accessible to anyone who has mastered basic knitting techniques.
The gauge for the Box Stitch is 12 stitches and 16 rows = 4 inches / 10 cm, measured blocked using the larger needle size.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern is specifically designed for Valley Yarns Berkshire Bulky, a luxurious chunky weight yarn with a fiber composition of 85% Wool / 15% Alpaca. This blend combines the durability and elasticity of wool with the softness and warmth of alpaca, resulting in a yarn that is both practical and indulgent to wear. Each skein contains 100g / 108 yards.
- Colorway shown: Med Grey Heather — a versatile, classic neutral well-suited to menswear.
- Yarn quantity required: 9 (9, 10, 12, 12) (14, 15, 16) skeins depending on size.
