712 All Dressed Up Stole – Knitting Pattern for Women by Susan Villas Lewis

The 712 All Dressed Up Stole is an elegant, long collared stole designed by Susan Villas Lewis and published as a downloadable PDF pattern. Knitted in Valley Yarns Goshen, this sophisticated accessory combines a flowing lace-inspired stole body with a separately constructed attached collar, making it a refined choice for special occasions or elevated everyday wear. The pattern is rated advanced beginner, meaning it is accessible to knitters who have moved beyond the basics and are comfortable following a short stitch repeat and picking up stitches along a finished edge.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a single garment with two distinct components:

  • Stole Body: A long rectangular panel measuring approximately 22 inches wide by 68 inches long, featuring garter stitch borders at each end and an allover lace-style pattern stitch throughout the body.
  • Collar: A shorter attached collar measuring approximately 23 inches wide by 5 inches deep, picked up directly from the center of the stole body and worked outward. The collar features optional short-row shaping for a subtly tapered, refined finish at the corners.

Construction and Techniques

The stole is worked flat (back and forth in rows) from cast-on to bind-off, making it approachable for knitters who are not yet comfortable with circular construction. The overall project is described as seamless, meaning no seaming is required at any stage — the collar is integrated directly into the stole rather than sewn on separately.

Stole Body Construction

The body begins with a cast-on of 99 stitches. A garter stitch border of approximately 1 inch is worked first — all rows knitted — before transitioning into the four-row lace pattern stitch. The body is worked until the piece measures 67 inches from the cast-on edge, with the instruction to measure the fabric while hanging it vertically to account for the natural weight and drape of the yarn blend. A final 1-inch garter stitch border is then worked before binding off.

Collar Construction

Once the stole body is complete, the stole is folded in half to locate the center point. Stitches are then picked up along the side edge of the stole body — 48 stitches on either side of center for a total of 96 stitches. Notably, the wrong side of the stole body becomes the right side of the collar, giving the collar a distinct visual character. The collar begins with several rows of garter stitch before entering the same lace pattern used in the body.

An optional short-row shaping section is included to create a subtle taper at the corners of the collar. Short rows are a technique where the knitter works only partway across a row before turning and working back, gradually building extra fabric in the center of the collar for a more tailored, draped appearance. For knitters who prefer a simpler finish, the pattern offers a straightforward path that skips the short rows entirely, resulting in a more square-edged collar.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

  • Garter Stitch: All rows knitted; used for the borders at each end of the stole body and as the foundation of the collar. Garter stitch creates a firm, reversible, slightly ridged fabric that lies flat without curling — ideal for edgings and borders.
  • Lace Pattern Stitch (4-row repeat): The main body stitch pattern is a four-row repeat combining yarn overs (yo), slip 1, k2, pass slipped stitch over (sl 1, k2, psso), and purl rows with garter selvedge edges. This creates an open, lace-like texture that is elegant yet structured.
    • Row 1 (RS): K1, *sl 1, k2, psso, yo; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2
    • Row 2 (WS): K1, purl to last st, k1
    • Row 3 (RS): K2, *yo, sl 1, k2, psso; repeat from * to last st
