683 Tulip Pullover – Knitting Pattern for Women by Kirsten Hipsky in Valley Yarns Stockbridge

The 683 Tulip Pullover, designed by Kirsten Hipsky, is a women's crew-neck, set-in sleeve pullover knitting pattern inspired by the bold, rich colors of spring tulips. Described as "an unexpected classic," this sweater is worked in a striking three-color palette that gives it a vibrant, seasonal character while remaining a timeless wardrobe staple. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and is rated advanced beginner in difficulty, making it an excellent next step for knitters who have mastered the basics and are ready to tackle more structured shaping techniques.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a women's pullover sweater with a classic crew neckline and set-in sleeves. It is designed to fit bust measurements ranging from 32–34 inches up to 56–58 inches, with finished bust measurements of 36 (40, 44, 48) (52, 56, 60) inches across seven sizes. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in size 36 inches. The colorwork design draws on the deep, saturated hues of tulips in bloom, combining three coordinating shades for a rich, layered effect.

Construction Techniques

The 683 Tulip Pullover uses a combination of construction methods that give knitters a well-rounded learning experience:

  • Top-down construction: The sweater begins at the back yoke and is worked downward, allowing knitters to try on the piece as they go and adjust fit before committing to the full length.
  • Worked flat (seamed): Sections of the garment are worked back and forth in rows on circular needles, and the finished pieces are seamed together. This traditional approach produces clean, structured seams that support the set-in sleeve silhouette.
  • Provisional cast on: The back yoke begins with a provisional cast on where possible, allowing live stitches to be picked up later for seamless integration of the front yoke and shoulder sections.
  • Working in the round: Certain sections, such as the body after joining, are worked in the round on circular needles, combining flat and circular knitting within the same project.
  • Short-row shoulder shaping: The back yoke features detailed short-row shaping using the wrap and turn (W&T) method across multiple rows, creating a naturally sloped shoulder line that fits the body more precisely than a standard bind-off.
  • Waist shaping: Decreases are worked at stitch markers to create a fitted waist, with four decreases worked per decrease round for a tailored silhouette.
  • Underarm shaping: Increases are worked at the beginning and end of right-side rows to shape the underarm and prepare for sleeve attachment.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure throughout the 683 Tulip Pullover is Stockinette stitch, worked both flat (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) and in the round (knit every round). Additional techniques incorporated into the pattern include:

  • Wrap and Turn (W&T): Used extensively in the shoulder shaping rows to create smooth, gradual short-row shaping without visible holes.
  • Increases and decreases: Standard knitting increases and decreases are used for underarm shaping and waist shaping throughout the body.
  • Pick up and knit: Used when joining the front yoke to the back, picking up stitches along the cast-on edge of the right shoulder to integrate the two sections.

Materials – Yarn

The pattern is written specifically for Valley Yarns Stockbridge, a worsted weight yarn with a luxurious fiber blend of 50% Superfine Alpaca and 50% Wool, sold in 50g/109-yard skeins. This blend offers the softness and drape of alpaca combined with the structure and elasticity of wool, making it well suited to a fitted pullover with defined stitch detail.

The three colors used in the pattern are:

  • Color A – Deep Red: 2 (2, 2
