639 Plesti Fair Isle Pullover and Hat – Knitting Pattern by Sara Delaney in Valley Yarns Northampton

The 639 Plesti Fair Isle Pullover and Hat is a coordinating knitting pattern set designed by Sara Delaney, featuring a classic Fair Isle stranded colorwork pullover sweater and a matching colorwork hat with pom-pom. Both pieces are worked in Valley Yarns Northampton, a 100% wool worsted-weight yarn, and are rated intermediate in difficulty. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and is sized to fit a wide range of chest measurements.

About the Plesti Pullover

The Plesti pullover is a slightly oversized Fair Isle sweater designed for women, worked entirely in the round from the bottom up. It features seamless raglan shaping, meaning the body and sleeves are joined and shaped together without any seaming. One of the pattern's clever design choices is that all of the colorwork is completed in the body before any shaping begins, making it easier for knitters to focus on one technique at a time.

The sweater is sized to fit chest measurements of 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, and 52 inches, with finished chest measurements of 34, 38, 42, 46, 50, and 54 inches respectively, providing a comfortable amount of positive ease throughout. This slightly oversized silhouette makes it a versatile wardrobe piece suitable for casual wear, office settings, or a day at the ski lodge.

Pullover Colorwork and Materials

The sweater uses a traditional Fair Isle color palette with five colors of Valley Yarns Northampton:

  • Color A – White: 6 (6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9) skeins – the primary background color
  • Color B – Sage Heather: 2 (2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4) skeins
  • Color C – Bright Blue Heather: 1 skein for all sizes
  • Color D – Garnet: 1 skein for all sizes
  • Color E – Ocean Heather: 1 skein for all sizes

Valley Yarns Northampton is a 100% wool yarn with a yardage of 247 yards per 100g skein, making it well suited to colorwork knitting. The wool fiber provides excellent stitch definition and the natural elasticity needed to keep stranded floats even and comfortable to wear.

About the Plesti Hat

The Plesti hat is designed as a companion piece to the pullover and is worked in a bolder, more playful colorway, encouraging knitters to experiment with color. It measures 20 inches in circumference and 10 inches tall, and is finished with a pom-pom at the crown. The hat's decrease shaping at the crown is intentionally designed to mimic the raglan shaping of the sweater, creating a cohesive visual connection between the two pieces.

The hat begins with a two-color long-tail cast-on, which creates a decorative ridge of color at the brim. It then transitions into corrugated ribbing worked for approximately 2 inches, before moving into the main colorwork chart. Crown decreases are worked using ssk and k2tog paired with stitch markers to create the raglan-inspired shaping.

Hat Colorwork and Materials

The hat uses five colors of Valley Yarns Northampton, with one skein of each:

  • Color A – Lake Heather
  • Color B – Pacific
  • Color C – Dahlia
  • Color D – Gold
  • Color E – Bright Pink

This vibrant combination contrasts with the more subdued tones of the sweater, and the pattern explicitly invites knitters to go wild with color for the hat while keeping the
