Pattern Summary: 399 Baguette Wrap – Knitting Pattern for Women in Valley Yarns Berkshire Bulky

The 399 Baguette Wrap is a women's knitted wrap designed by Erika Flory and worked in Valley Yarns Berkshire Bulky weight yarn. This cozy, elongated wrap combines the tactile richness of cable twists with a delicate slip stitch texture, creating a piece that looks impressively complex while remaining accessible to beginner knitters. The finished wrap measures approximately 65 inches in length, making it a generously sized accessory perfect for draping, wrapping, or wearing as a scarf.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a rectangular wrap or shawl worked flat from one short end to the other. The design features a combination of a cable panel and a slip stitch texture panel running the length of the piece, framed by classic ribbing at each end. The result is a structured yet drapey accessory with visual interest on both the cable and slip stitch sections.

Techniques Used

  • Worked flat: The entire wrap is knitted back and forth in rows on straight or circular needles, making it straightforward to follow and ideal for knitters who prefer flat construction.
  • Cables: Two cable maneuvers are used to create the twisted rope-like panel. Cables are formed by temporarily placing stitches on a cable needle and crossing them either in front of or behind the working needle, producing a braided visual effect.
  • Slip stitch pattern: A decorative slip stitch technique creates a lacy, elongated texture. On right-side rows, stitches are slipped as if to knit, a yarn over is worked, and the slipped stitch is passed over both the knit stitch and the yarn over, forming an open, elegant pattern.
  • Ribbing: K3, p3 ribbing is worked for six rows at both the cast-on and bind-off edges, providing a tidy, stretchy border that frames the wrap neatly.

Stitches Used

  • K3, P3 Ribbing: Alternating three knit stitches and three purl stitches, this classic rib stitch is used for the border rows at both ends of the wrap.
  • Slip Stitch Pattern: A right-side row technique where one stitch is slipped knitwise, a yarn over is made, and the slipped stitch is passed over both the knit stitch and the yarn over. Wrong-side rows are purled plain.
  • C8B (Cable 8 Back): Four stitches are slipped to a cable needle and held in back of the work, four stitches are knitted from the left needle, then the four held stitches are knitted from the cable needle. This creates a right-leaning cable cross over eight stitches.
  • C4F (Cable 4 Front): Four stitches are slipped to a cable needle and held in front of the work, four stitches are knitted, then the four held stitches are knitted from the cable needle. This creates a left-leaning cable cross over four stitches.
  • Standard knit and purl stitches form the foundation of all rows and the reverse stockinette purl columns that separate the cable panel from the slip stitch section.

Pattern Structure

The wrap begins with a cast-on of 69 stitches, followed by six rows of K3, P3 ribbing. The main body is worked over a 12-row repeat that integrates the cable panel on the left side of the work and the slip stitch pattern on the right side, separated by a three-stitch purl column. The cable panel alternates between the C8B cross on Row 5 and the C4F cross on Row 11, while the remaining right-side rows in the repeat are worked in plain knit within the cable section. All wrong-side rows throughout the body are purled across. This repeat continues until the piece reaches approximately 65 inches or the knitter's desired length, after which six more rows of K3, P3 ribbing are worked before binding off in ribbing.
