Product Description
This Shawl comes in 1 size as written. It is smaller than shawls 1 and 2 in the series do to using a size 2 knitting needle. In the summer and during arthritis flare ups I love to use a smaller shawl like this on my shoulders. During winter I put the deep part of the shawl in front to another layer of warmth under a jacket.
I started this shawl before the owners of Bijou Basin Ranch retired. It sat for a little over a month before I finished it. I am giving this a difficulty of medium because I found the yarn tends to be slippery, this can lead to a few dropped stitches which I found hard to pick up.
3 of 3 A Shawl Study by Sheri Karobonik
What is Being Made
3 of 3 A Shawl Study is a knitted shawl designed by Sheri Karobonik as the third installment in a shawl series. This particular shawl is smaller in size compared to the first two designs in the collection, making it an ideal accessory for layering during warmer months or for providing additional warmth under jackets during winter. The shawl's compact design allows it to drape comfortably over the shoulders without excessive bulk, and its versatility means it can be worn with the deep section positioned in front for enhanced warmth or styled casually for summer wear.
Techniques and Construction
This knitted shawl employs intermediate-level knitting techniques that require some experience with yarn management and stitch correction. The pattern involves working with yarn that has a slippery texture, which presents a moderate challenge during construction. Knitters should be prepared to manage dropped stitches, which can occur more frequently with this particular yarn type and may require careful attention to pick up and correct. The designer rates this project as medium difficulty specifically due to these yarn handling considerations, making it suitable for knitters who have completed basic projects and are ready to develop their technical skills.
Stitches Used
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern documentation provided, the shawl construction utilizes standard knitting stitches appropriate for lace-weight and fingering-weight yarn work. The slippery nature of the yarn means stitches require careful tension management to prevent unintended drops during the knitting process.
Materials and Yarn Weight
This pattern is designed to work with 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, as well as lace-weight yarn. The sample shown was created using yarn from Bijou Basin Ranch. The pattern calls for size 2 knitting needles, which contributes to the shawl's smaller finished size compared to earlier designs in the series. The yarn specified for this project requires hand washing in warm water only, making it a delicate fiber that demands gentle care after completion. Knitters are advised to have at least one to two cakes of yarn available in their stash to complete this project.
