3 Little Pigs Finger Puppets by Sam Pratt
What Is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern creates a set of three finger puppets based on the classic Three Little Pigs fairytale. Each puppet stands approximately 12cm in height and is designed to fit on a finger, making them ideal for storytelling, play, or decorative display. The set includes three individual pigs, each knitted in a different color to distinguish the characters from one another.
Craft and Techniques
These finger puppets are created using knitting, a fundamental fiber craft that builds fabric from interlocking loops of yarn using two needles. The pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, meaning it requires familiarity with basic knitting techniques and the ability to follow written instructions with abbreviations and stitch counts.
The construction method involves working the head and body as a single continuous piece, which streamlines the assembly process and creates a seamless structure ideal for a small three-dimensional toy. This integrated approach is common in amigurumi-style knitting, where stuffing is added to create dimensional forms.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The pattern employs several essential knitting techniques:
- Knit (K) – the fundamental stitch that creates the basic fabric structure
- Purl (P) – the reverse of the knit stitch, used to create texture variation
- Knit 2 Together (K2tog) – a decrease technique that reduces stitch count by combining two stitches into one, essential for shaping the puppet's form
- Purl 2 Together (P2tog) – the purl equivalent of the decrease stitch
- Knit Front and Back (KFB) – an increase technique that creates two stitches from one, used to expand the fabric where needed
- Purl Front and Back (PFB) – the purl version of the increase stitch
These increases and decreases allow the knitter to shape the three-dimensional form of the puppet's head and body, creating the contours necessary for a recognizable character.
Materials Required
The pattern specifies 2.75mm knitting needles and calls for 4-ply yarn, a lightweight yarn weight that produces fine, detailed fabric suitable for small projects. The recommended yarn is Patons Fairytale Fab and Patons Fairytale Dreamtime 4-ply in the following colors:
- 25g Patons Fairytale Fab 4ply in Pale Blue (01054) – for one pig
- 25g Patons Fairytale Fab 4ply in Red – for one pig
- 25g Patons Fairytale Fab 4ply in Green – for one pig
- Patons Fairytale Dreamtime 4ply in Pale Pink (01035) – for details
- Oddments of black Patons Fairytale Fab 4ply (01099) – for facial features
- Small amount of polyester stuffing – to add dimension and structure to the finished puppets
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 26 stitches by 34 rows per 10x10cm square. Achieving the correct gauge is critical for ensuring the puppets knit to the intended finished size of approximately 12cm in height. Knitters should swatch before beginning the project to verify their gauge matches the pattern specifications.
