Product Description
Valley Yarns Auriga is an elegant women’s jumper knit in Huntington Splash. This top has a simple shape with a boat neck and airy lace shoulder panels, perfect for the warm weather. Wear this under a jacket for the office or as is on a dinner date. Auriga is knit in the round from the bottom up to the underarms and then worked back and forth to the shoulders. Stitches are cast on at each edge for the short sleeves. The lace panels are worked separately and then seamed to the long side edges of the sleeves. Valley Yarns’ Huntington Splash is a simple sock weight yarn with a bit of pizzazz and is perfect for this jumper. The lace pattern is charted and written out.

1210 Auriga – Women's Boat Neck Tee Knitting Pattern by Julie Turjoman for Valley Yarns
The 1210 Auriga is a sophisticated, lightweight women's pullover tee designed by Julie Turjoman and published by Valley Yarns. Rated Advanced Beginner, this pattern offers an elegant combination of simple silhouette shaping and thoughtful construction details, making it an achievable yet impressive project for knitters ready to move beyond the basics. The finished garment features a classic boat neckline, short sleeves with airy lace shoulder panels, and a subtle all-over texture that lets the yarn's natural character shine. Designed with warm weather in mind, the Auriga tee is described as versatile enough for weekend walks or an evening out.
What Is Being Made
The Auriga is a women's short-sleeved pullover jumper worked in eight sizes ranging from XS through 4XL, with finished bust measurements spanning 32 to 60 inches. The pattern is designed to be worn with 0 to 2 inches of positive ease, giving a relaxed but tailored fit. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in Size S. The defining design features are the boat neckline and the lace panels that form the tops of the sleeves and frame the shoulders, adding a delicate, open-work contrast to the otherwise smooth and subtly textured body fabric.
Construction and Techniques
The Auriga uses an interesting hybrid construction that blends working in the round and working flat, making it a great pattern for knitters looking to build confidence with both approaches in a single project.
- Bottom-up construction: The body is cast on at the hem and worked upward in one piece in the round to the underarms. The cast-on uses a stretchy method such as the Old Norwegian cast-on to ensure the ribbed hem has comfortable elasticity.
- Dividing for front and back: At the underarms, the work is divided and each piece is then worked back and forth in rows (flat) from the underarms up to the shoulders.
- Short sleeve construction: Stitches for the short sleeves are cast on at each side edge using the Backward Loop method, a simple technique that adds stitches mid-project without requiring a separate cast-on piece.
- Lace panels worked separately: The tops of the sleeves are lace panels knitted as separate pieces and then seamed to the long side edges of the sleeves, where they simultaneously form part of the neckline and the tops of the shoulders. Each lace panel measures 2¾ inches wide, blocked.
- Seamed finishing: The pattern is therefore a seamed construction, requiring knitters to join the lace panels to the sleeve edges neatly — a valuable seaming skill to practice.
Stitches Used
The Auriga draws on a small but well-chosen set of stitch patterns that together create its distinctive look:
- Ridged Stockinette stitch: The main body fabric is worked in stockinette stitch with single purl rows worked at regular intervals, creating a subtle horizontal texture across the body. This is sometimes called a ridged or interrupted stockinette pattern and adds visual interest without overwhelming the colorful yarn.
- K1/P1 Rib: All body and sleeve hems are finished in knit 1, purl 1 ribbing, providing a neat, elastic edge that sits comfortably against the skin.
- Lace: The shoulder panels feature lace knitting, an open-work technique that uses yarn-overs and decreases to create decorative holes and a light, airy fabric. These panels are the visual centrepiece of the design, adding elegance and a warm-weather feel to the garment.
