Product Description

Valley Yarns Aconite is a stunning women’s all-over lace jumper that is the perfect piece for holiday parties and such knit in Westfield. The jumper features full three-quarter length sleeves that gather at the cuff and a scoop neck. Aconite is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up, and the sleeves are worked from the armholes to the cuff then seamed. The neckband stitches are picked up along the neck edge and worked in the round. Valley Yarns Westfield is a luxurious blend of Merino, silk, and yak in a versatile DK weight. Each of the fibers in Westfield takes the dye slightly differently, resulting in beautifully nuanced shades that will add depth to your projects. The lace pattern is charted and written out.

Pattern #1160 Aconite – Allover Lace Pullover Knitting Pattern for Women by Julie Turjoman

Pattern #1160 Aconite, designed by Julie Turjoman and published by Valley Yarns, is an elegant allover lace pullover sweater designed for women who want a sophisticated, eye-catching garment for parties and special occasions. Rated at an Experienced skill level, this pattern is a rewarding challenge that produces impressive, timeless results. The design is available as a downloadable PDF.

What Is Being Made

The finished garment is a women's lace pullover jumper featuring a scoop neckline, full three-quarter-length sleeves that gather elegantly at the cuff, drop shoulders with short-row shaping for enhanced drape, and minimal body shaping that allows the lace pattern to take center stage. The sweater falls to mid-hip length and is designed to fit with 4 to 6 inches of positive ease, making it a relaxed yet refined silhouette. For a closer fit, knitters are advised to work one size smaller than their usual size.

The pattern is offered in nine sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, and 5XL. Finished bust measurements range from 32¼ inches up to 65 inches, making this an inclusive pattern with a wide range of sizing. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in Size S.

Construction Techniques

This pattern employs a thoughtful combination of construction methods that give knitters a thorough technical workout. The sweater body is worked entirely flat in pieces, back and forth in rows, from the bottom up. Selvage stitches are included throughout to facilitate clean, professional seaming. Key construction details include:

  • Bottom-up construction for both the front and back body pieces, cast on using the Cable method
  • Seamed construction – the front and back are joined at the shoulders and seamed along the sides
  • Drop shoulders shaped with short-row shaping to improve drape and fit
  • Top-down sleeve construction – full sleeves are worked downward from the armholes to three-quarter length
  • Gathered cuffs achieved through decrease shaping worked just before a narrow hem, creating a soft, gathered silhouette at the wrist
  • Picked-up neckline – stitches are picked up around the scoop neck and worked in a narrow band to finish the neckline cleanly
  • Worked in the round for certain components such as the neckline band
  • Worked flat for the main body pieces

Stitches and Lace Techniques

The defining feature of the Aconite pullover is its allover lace stitch pattern, which covers the entire body and sleeves of the garment. Lace knitting involves a combination of yarn-overs and decreases worked in a deliberate sequence to create decorative openwork fabric. This technique requires careful attention to stitch counts and pattern repeats, which is why the pattern is classified as Experienced difficulty.

  • Allover lace stitch – the primary stitch pattern, worked across the full width of the body and sleeves; one repeat of the lace pattern measures approximately 1¾ inches wide
  • Short-row shaping – used at the drop shoulders to add structure and improve drape without traditional bind-off shaping
  • Decrease shaping – worked at the sleeve cuffs to create the gathered effect before the narrow hem
  • Stitch pick-up – used to create the scoop neck band seamlessly after the body is assembled
  • Selvage stitches – included throughout the flat-worked pieces to ensure neat, even seams

Blocking is an essential finishing step for this pattern. The gauge is measured after blocking, and the lace pattern will open up and display its full beauty only once the finished pieces have been wet-blocked and dried flat.
