114 TLC Designs Flower Power Crochet Blanket

Project Overview

The Flower Power blanket is an intermediate-level crochet project designed by Tricia Crow that creates a finished throw measuring 45 x 55 inches. This charted design combines single crochet with decorative bobble stitches to produce a textured floral pattern across the entire surface of the blanket.

What Is Being Made

This is a crochet throw blanket featuring an all-over floral motif created through a combination of single crochet stitches and bobble stitch texture. The finished piece serves as a decorative blanket or throw suitable for home décor, offering both visual interest and tactile appeal through its dimensional stitch pattern.

Techniques Used

  • Chart reading: The pattern is worked from a stitch chart where each square represents one stitch, read from right to left and worked from bottom to top
  • Bobble stitch placement: Bobble stitches are strategically positioned throughout the design and worked to the back of the fabric for a three-dimensional effect
  • Spacing between textured elements: Single crochet stitches are worked in varying quantities between bobble stitch clusters, with numbers on the chart indicating when more than 3 single crochets appear consecutively
  • Edging: Once the main body is complete, single crochet is worked evenly around the entire perimeter with 3 single crochets in each corner for a finished edge

Stitches Used

  • Single crochet (sc): The foundation stitch used throughout the blanket, forming the base fabric and filling areas between bobble stitches
  • Bobble stitch: A decorative stitch created by working multiple yarn overs and loops in the same stitch location, then drawing yarn through all loops at once. Each bobble is worked by repeating the yarn over and draw through sequence 4 times in the same stitch before completing the bobble by drawing through all 5 loops on the hook. These stitches are intentionally worked to the back of the fabric to create dimensional texture
  • Slip stitch: Used to join the edging rounds
  • Chain stitch: Used for the foundation chain (184 chains) and to begin each row (ch 1)

Construction Details

The blanket begins with a foundation chain of 184 chains, with single crochet worked in the second chain from the hook and in each remaining chain to create 183 stitches across. The first three rows are worked entirely in single crochet to establish the base. Rows 4 through 264 follow the stitch chart, which guides the placement of bobble stitches and single crochets to create the Flower Power pattern. The final three rows (265–267) return to single crochet across all stitches. The total stitch count remains consistent at 183 stitches per row throughout the 267 total rows. After the main body is complete, single crochet is worked evenly around the entire perimeter, with 3 single crochets placed in each corner to ensure proper shaping, then joined with a slip stitch to finish.

Materials

  • Yarn: Caron Cotton Cakes, requiring 3700 yards total. This yarn weight is classified as worsted weight, making it suitable for the intermediate-level construction and providing good stitch definition for both the single crochet and bobble stitch elements
  • Hook: Size G crochet hook, which pairs appropriately with worsted weight yarn to achieve the correct gauge and fabric drape for this throw blanket

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While single crochet is a fundamental stitch accessible to beginners, the bobble stitch technique requires practice and precision to execute consistently. The extended length of the project (267 rows) and the need to accurately follow a stitch chart throughout the majority of the blanket make this design suitable for crocheters with some experience who are comfortable reading charts and working with textured stitches.
