1:12th Scale Girls' Heart Jumper & Skirt by Frances Powell

Project Overview

This advanced knitting pattern creates a charming two-piece outfit for 1:12th scale dolls house dolls, specifically designed to fit 4-inch (10 cm) tall figures. The set comprises a fitted jumper featuring an optional heart motif and a coordinating skirt, both worked in delicate crochet cotton thread on ultra-fine needles. This is an intricate miniature knitting project requiring precision and experience with small-scale garment construction.

Jumper Construction

The jumper is a fitted garment with a decorative heart motif on the front, created using two-colour knitting techniques. The design allows for customization—crafters may omit the contrast colour heart motif entirely and work the jumper in a single colour if preferred. The garment demonstrates advanced shaping techniques typical of fitted dolls' clothing, requiring careful stitch manipulation and precise gauge control to achieve proper proportions on such a tiny scale.

Skirt Construction

The skirt is a separate component worked in a contrast colour crochet cotton, providing visual interest when paired with the jumper. The pattern is designed as a coordinated set, though the skirt can be made independently. The designer notes that matching tights are available as a separate downloadable pattern, allowing crafters to create a complete outfit.

Knitting Techniques & Stitches

  • Primary Stitch: Stockinette stitch (stocking stitch) — alternating knit and purl rows to create a smooth, flat fabric
  • Shaping Methods: Increases (working twice into the same stitch to create two stitches) and decreases using knit two together (k2tog) and purl two together (p2tog) for fitted shaping
  • Colour Work: Two-colour knitting technique for the heart motif on the jumper front, using main colour and contrast colour
  • Construction Details: Stitch holders used for managing live stitches during garment assembly
  • Stitch Abbreviations: Pattern uses standard knitting notation including st (stitch), k (knit), p (purl), sst (stockinette stitch), inc (increase), k2tog (knit two together), p2tog (purl two together), M (main colour), C (contrast colour), and sl (slip stitch)

Materials & Tools

Needles: Size 22 (0.75 mm/US size 6/0) knitting needles — extremely fine needles appropriate for miniature-scale work with thread-weight yarn

Yarn: No. 80 crochet cotton thread in main colour and contrast colour. The jumper requires approximately ¼ ball of main colour crochet cotton plus a small amount of contrast colour for the heart motif. The skirt requires approximately ¼ ball of contrast colour crochet cotton. This thread-weight material is essential for achieving proper scale and drape in 1:12th scale garments.

Additional Supplies: Stitch holders for managing stitches during construction

Difficulty Level & Skill Requirements

This pattern is classified as advanced, reflecting the specialized skills required for successful completion. Crafters undertaking this project should have solid experience with knitting fundamentals, including confident stitch work, shaping techniques, and two-colour knitting. The extremely small scale (0.75 mm needles and thread-weight yarn) demands steady hands, good eyesight or magnification, and patience with intricate detail work. Prior experience with miniature knitting or dolls' clothing construction is highly recommended.
