Product Description

Valley Yarns Viceroy is a stunning women’s sleeveless tunic featuring a v-neck and decrease shaping at the sides to emphasize it’s A-line shaping that compliments all figures knit in Leverett. The jumper is knit in the round from the bottom up in Twist Rib stitch, with plain sides in reverse stocking stitch to the underarm. The tunic is then divided and worked back and forth to the shoulders. Valley Yarns Leverett is a stay-cool blend of Pima cotton and linen that will work up beautifully into everything from cardigans to dishcloths! The Twist Rib stitch pattern is charted and written out.

Pattern #1083 Viceroy – Sleeveless V-Neck Tunic Knitting Pattern by Julie Turjoman for Valley Yarns Leverett

About This Design

The Viceroy is a beautifully conceived sleeveless tunic pattern designed by Julie Turjoman and published by Valley Yarns as pattern #1083. This versatile piece features a flattering V-neckline and elegant A-line silhouette, achieved through carefully placed decrease shaping along the side sections. The design is intended to complement every figure, sitting at a low hip length that makes it equally wearable over a tee-shirt or on its own as a standalone garment. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and is rated Intermediate in difficulty.

Sizing and Fit

The Viceroy is offered in a generous range of nine sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, and 5XL. The sample garment shown in the pattern is knitted in Size S. Finished bust measurements range from 34 inches (XS) up to 66 inches (5XL), while finished hip measurements range from 38 inches (XS) up to 70 inches (5XL). The pattern is designed to be worn with 2–4 inches of positive ease at the bust and 4–6 inches of positive ease at the hips, giving the finished tunic a relaxed, flowing drape that is both comfortable and stylish.

What Is Being Made

Knitters following this pattern will create a sleeveless, V-neck tunic — a garment that bridges the gap between a long top and a short dress. The A-line shaping gives the piece a gently flared hem, making it flattering across a wide range of body types. The focal point of the design is the Twist Rib stitch pattern, which runs vertically through the front and back of the body, lending the tunic a refined, elongating visual effect. The plain side sections, worked in reverse stockinette stitch, frame the Twist Rib panels and emphasize the garment's structured yet drapey character.

Construction Techniques

This pattern uses a combination of construction methods that intermediate knitters will find both instructive and satisfying to execute:

  • Bottom-up construction: The body is begun at the hem and worked upward, which allows the A-line shaping to be built in naturally from the start.
  • Worked in the round: From the hem up to the underarms, the body is knitted in the round on circular needles, creating a seamless tube and eliminating the need for side seams in the lower portion.
  • Worked flat (back and forth in rows): After dividing at the underarms, the front and back are each worked separately, back and forth in rows, from the armhole shaping up to the shoulders.
  • A-line decrease shaping: Decreases are worked into the side sections as the piece progresses from hip to bust, creating the characteristic flared-to-fitted silhouette.
  • Short-row shoulder shaping: Short rows are used at the shoulders to improve fit and drape, a technique that adds a professional, tailored finish to the neckline and shoulder seams.
  • Long-Tail cast-on: The pattern specifies the Long-Tail method for casting on, which produces a neat, elastic edge well-suited to the garment's ribbed hem.

Stitches Used

Several distinct stitch patterns appear throughout this design, each serving a specific structural or decorative purpose:

  • Twist Rib stitch: The signature stitch of the Viceroy, this textured pattern is worked across the front and back panels between stitch markers. It creates a vertical, ribbed effect with added visual interest compared to standard ribbing. Instructions are provided both as written directions and as charts, accommodating different learning styles.
  • Reverse stockinette stitch: Used for the side sections of the body, reverse stockinette (purl side facing outward) provides a smooth, receding background that highlights the Twist Rib panels and contributes to the garment's overall dr
