Uda Beanie Knitting Pattern by Sofia Caro

What is Being Made

The Uda beanie is a beginner-friendly knitted hat designed by Sofia Caro for Comfy Stitch Shop. This cozy headwear project is available in multiple sizes to fit infants through adults, with head circumference options ranging from 16-19 inches for 6-12 month old babies, 18-20 inches for toddlers aged 1-3 years, 19-22 inches for children aged 3-8 years, and 20-24 inches for teens and adults. The beanie features a classic construction that works up quickly, making it an ideal project for knitters new to hat construction.

Techniques Used

This knitting pattern employs fundamental techniques suitable for beginners learning to create garments in the round. The pattern uses the long-tail cast-on method to establish stitches on the circular needle. Knitters then join their work in the round, a key technique for seamless hat construction. The pattern provides guidance on proper joining methods, including tips for avoiding twisted stitches—a common challenge for newer knitters. The Uda beanie can be worked using either traditional double-pointed needles (dpns) or the Magic Loop Method with a long circular needle, giving crafters flexibility based on their tool preferences and comfort level.

Stitches Used

The Uda beanie pattern utilizes basic knit stitches that form the foundation of most knitting projects. The primary stitches employed include:

  • Knit (K) - the fundamental stitch that creates the main fabric texture
  • Purl (P) - used to create textural variety and design elements within the hat
  • Knit 2 Together (K2tog) - a decrease stitch used to shape the crown of the beanie
  • Purl 2 Together (P2tog) - another decrease technique for shaping

These basic stitches combine to create a wearable hat while teaching essential knitting skills. The pattern also incorporates marker placement to help knitters track their position within each round, an important organizational tool for circular knitting.

Materials and Yardage

The Uda beanie pattern calls for bulky weight yarn, specifically Red Heart Soft Essentials, making it an excellent quick-knit project. The yardage requirement ranges from 40 to 104 yards depending on the size being made, with smaller infant sizes requiring less yarn and larger adult sizes requiring more. The bulky weight yarn paired with appropriately sized needles creates a fabric with good drape and warmth suitable for cold weather wear.

Knitters will need US 8/5mm circular needles measuring 16 inches in length, along with US 8/5mm double-pointed needles (dpns) for working the crown decreases, or alternatively, circular needles with a long cable for executing the Magic Loop Method. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and scissors for trimming. Many knitters choose to add a pom pom to the crown of the finished beanie using a pom pom maker, a popular finishing touch that adds visual interest and personality to the completed hat.

Gauge and Construction Details

The pattern specifies a gauge of 12 stitches over 4 inches, which is typical for bulky weight yarn. This gauge information helps knitters verify they are working at the correct tension to achieve the intended finished hat size. The cast-on totals 56, 64, 64, or 72 stitches depending on size, with a note that some joining methods may require casting on one additional stitch (57, 65, 65, or 73 total) to facilitate joining in the round. The pattern provides visual guidance through pictures demonstrating proper joining techniques, supporting beginners in mastering this essential skill.

Love using love knitting...

I purchased a downloadable knitting pattern for a hat using chunky wool. It was available immediately, knitted up easily and turned out true to size. I'm making 40 in all and want each one to look the same, but by using different coloured wool, I have a bespoke hat. It's so relaxing and rewarding to knit and Love Knitting, is my place to go to, and not just for wool!
