Trinity Headband by Lizzy Knits

Project Overview

The Trinity Headband is a quick knitting project designed by Erin Gates of Lizzy Knits. This practical accessory combines cable knit techniques with garter stitch borders to create a stretchy, comfortable headband suitable for cool weather wear or keeping hair secured while staying warm. The design works equally well as a stash buster project, requiring minimal yardage to complete.

What Is Being Made

A knit headband that functions as both a fashion accessory and functional hair accessory. The headband is knit flat in a rectangular shape and then seamed at the ends to create a circular band that fits around the head. The design accommodates various head sizes through the stretch provided by the garter stitch borders.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level pattern employs several key knitting techniques:

  • Cable knitting: The primary design feature uses a braided cable combination with both right and left leaning crosses, creating visual texture and interest down the center of the headband
  • Flat knitting: The headband is worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, making it accessible for knitters who prefer traditional needle work
  • Seaming: The finished edges are joined together using a tapestry needle to create the circular headband shape
  • Gauge work: Proper gauge measurement ensures the finished headband will fit correctly and maintain appropriate stretch

Stitches Used

The Trinity Headband incorporates fundamental knitting stitches combined in strategic ways:

  • Stockinette stitch: Used as the base fabric for gauge measurement and the primary stitch structure
  • Garter stitch: Applied as borders on both sides of the headband to provide elasticity and prevent curling while adding a finished appearance
  • Cable stitches: Specifically c3f (cable 3 front) and c3b (cable 3 back) abbreviations, which involve slipping stitches onto a cable needle and crossing them over or under subsequent stitches to create the braided cable effect

Materials and Specifications

The Trinity Headband requires minimal materials, making it an efficient project:

  • Yarn: 55 yards of bulky weight yarn (the pattern sample used Hayfield Chunky with Wool)
  • Needles: US 10 (6.0mm) straight needles for the main knitting
  • Notions: One cable needle for working the cable stitches and a tapestry needle for seaming the finished edges together
  • Gauge: 14 stitches and 18 rows over a 4-inch square in stockinette stitch using US 10 (6.0mm) needles

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate knitting project, the Trinity Headband is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and have some experience with cable techniques. The pattern requires understanding of cable abbreviations and the ability to work with a cable needle, but the straightforward construction and quick completion time make it an approachable intermediate project.

Efficient and professional company.

I’ve made head bands for all my family. It’s been a great project in lockdown. It’s a very simple pattern, easy to follow and really nice when made up. The yarn knitted up well.
