Product Description

Did you know that a snowboard was originally called a snurfer? The word came from combining “snow” and “surfer”, because you were essentially surfing on snow covered hills. The first prototype was made with two skis that were held together and a rope was attached to the front to hold onto for stability. Eventually it became just one board with the rope, before slowly evolving into the snowboards we know today. I love snowboarding, so I decided to finally design my own cowl to wear when I go. The 2x2 ribbing gives it a snug fit from your nose all the way to the base of your neck. Some added short rows in the front allow the cowl to lay out nicely when draping onto your chest and prevents any unnecessary fabric bunching up on the back of your neck. So if you enjoy snurfing, snowboarding, skiing, sledding, snow-tubing, or if you just hate the cold air in general like I do, this cowl will be perfect for you. Happy knitting!

The Snurfer Cowl by Attic 166

Project Overview

The Snurfer Cowl is a knitted cowl designed by Attic 166 Knitwear, inspired by the history of snowboarding and the original term "snurfer"—a portmanteau of "snow" and "surfer." This intermediate-level knitting pattern creates a versatile neck accessory perfect for cold-weather activities including snowboarding, skiing, sledding, and snow-tubing, or simply for anyone seeking protection from cold air.

Construction and Design Features

This cowl is engineered with specific shaping techniques to ensure comfort and proper draping. The primary construction method uses 2x2 ribbing, which creates a snug, fitted silhouette that hugs the neck from nose level down to the base of the neck. The ribbed texture provides both stretch and structure, allowing the cowl to conform closely to the wearer's body while maintaining its shape.

Strategic short rows are incorporated into the front section of the cowl. These short rows serve a functional purpose: they allow the fabric to lay flat and drape elegantly across the chest when worn, while simultaneously preventing excess fabric from bunching up uncomfortably at the back of the neck. This thoughtful design detail ensures a polished appearance and enhanced wearability.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

  • 2x2 Ribbing: The primary stitch pattern, alternating two knit stitches with two purl stitches to create vertical columns of texture and elasticity
  • Short Rows: Partial rows worked in the front section to shape the cowl and control fabric distribution

Yarn and Materials

This pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, a lightweight to medium yarn that knits to a relatively fine gauge. DK weight provides an ideal balance for cowl construction—substantial enough to provide warmth without excessive bulk, yet refined enough for comfortable neck wear. The specific needle size and yardage requirements are detailed within the downloadable PDF pattern from Attic 166.

Skill Level

Rated as an intermediate knitting project, The Snurfer Cowl is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle shaping techniques. Familiarity with ribbing patterns and basic short-row construction is beneficial for successful completion of this design.
