Product Description

Where we live, in Northern Alberta, Canada we move ahead our clocks by 1 hour for Daylights Savings time. It's known around the world as "Spring Ahead" and that's where the inspiration behind the name of our Spring Ahead Beanie came from... and...who doesn't need another beanie?!!

This is the perfect light hat for that time of year when the weather is just starting to warm up but it's still a bit chilly... SPRING!!

You will need approx. 180yds of DK yarn and size 4mm (US 6) for knitting in the round. (This hat is very simple to manipulate and adjust for using different weights of yarn and different sizes of needles)

It's a super relaxing and easy pattern just using knits and purls, and with 3 sizes and the multiples given, you'll be able to knit one for everyone in the family!

Spring Ahead Beanie by Cozy Up Knits

What is Being Made

The Spring Ahead Beanie is a versatile knitted hat pattern designed for three different sizes: Child (approximately 19-20 inch head circumference), Ladies (approximately 22-23 inch head circumference), and Men's (approximately 24-25 inch head circumference). This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Cozy Up Knits offers a beginner-friendly approach to hat knitting with excellent customization options for various yarn weights and head sizes.

Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The construction begins with a cast on and proceeds with ribbing to create the hat's elastic cuff. A critical technique included in the pattern is the increase round, where knitters perform even increases around the circumference using the knit front and back (kfb) method to transition from the ribbed section to the body. The hat is worked in the round, a standard technique for seamless hat construction. The pattern demonstrates flexibility in yarn weight adaptation, allowing crafters to adjust their materials while maintaining proper stitch multiples.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k): The primary stitch forming the stockinette fabric in the round
  • Purl (p): Used in the ribbing sections to create the textured cuff
  • Knit 1 through the back loop (k1tlb): A variation stitch for textural interest
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog): A decrease stitch for shaping
  • Knit front and back (kfb): An increase stitch used in the transition round between ribbing and body

The ribbing requires a multiple of 2 stitches for proper pattern repeat, while the body section requires a multiple of 7 stitches. A plain knit round follows the ribbing to accommodate the necessary increases for reaching the body stitch multiple.

Materials and Gauge

The Spring Ahead Beanie requires approximately 80 grams of DK weight yarn, which yields roughly 200 yards. Knitters will need size 4.0mm (US 6) needles for working in the round, along with a darning needle for finishing. The pattern specifies a gauge of 6 stitches and 8 rows per inch in stockinette stitch worked in the round, which is essential for achieving the correct finished head circumference. This gauge and yarn weight combination makes the pattern accessible for beginners while producing a well-fitting, professional-looking finished hat.
