Product Description

Living in Kansas, I have a friend who grew up on Oz books. I felt like it would be a great series of reading character bookmarks using the pictures as inspiration. Here is my rendition of Dorothy's friend, the scarecrow.of Oz. The crochet stitches include, sc, hdc, dc, tr and sl st and front loop and back loop work. The pattern includes description of abbreviations and complete instructions. It uses small amounts of crochet thread and many colors can be used so it is a great project to use up small amounts of crochet thread (20 yards being the most that is needed). 20 yards natural or new ecru (or choice of skin, cowl and glove color) 13 yards classic blue Hawaii (or choice of shirt color) 17 yards fudge brown (or choice of hat and boot color) 10 yards misty copper (or choice of pants) 4 yards cream or white (or choice of Diploma or “scarecrows’ brain" color) 10 yards goldenrod yellow (or choice of straw and rope) Uses US crochet terms

Project Overview

This is a crocheted reading character bookmark inspired by the Scarecrow from the classic Wizard of Oz story. Designed by LoisLeigh Anderson for AndersonsCreations and part of the Story Time Bookmark Series, this intermediate-level project creates a dimensional bookmark featuring the beloved character. The design is ideal for readers who appreciate adventure tales and classic literature, and makes a charming accessory for book lovers.

What You'll Create

The finished bookmark depicts the Scarecrow character in full detail, complete with a distinctive hat, shirt, pants, boots, and gloves. The design includes representational elements such as straw details and a diploma to reference the character's journey in the Oz story. This three-dimensional crocheted figure serves as both a functional bookmark and a decorative reading companion.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

This project employs several fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques to construct the bookmark. The pattern utilizes the following stitches:

  • Single crochet (sc) for creating tight, dense fabric sections
  • Half double crochet (hdc) for medium-weight fabric areas
  • Double crochet (dc) for taller stitches and faster coverage
  • Treble crochet (tr) for extended height and texture variation
  • Slip stitch (sl st) for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions

The pattern also incorporates front loop and back loop work, a technique that creates textural interest and definition by working into only one loop of the previous stitch rather than both loops. This advanced detail work adds depth and character definition to the finished bookmark.

Materials and Yarn Weight

This project uses bedspread weight cotton thread, size 10, a fine thread that creates delicate, detailed work perfect for a small bookmark accessory. The thread weight allows for precise stitch definition and intricate shaping. The pattern requires approximately 84 yards of thread in total across multiple colors:

  • 20 yards natural or new ecru for skin tone and cowl/glove areas
  • 13 yards classic blue Hawaii for the shirt
  • 17 yards fudge brown for the hat and boots
  • 10 yards misty copper for the pants
  • 4 yards cream or white for the diploma and "scarecrow's brain" details
  • 10 yards goldenrod yellow for straw and rope elements
  • Small amount of red for mouth, nose, and diploma tie accents (embroidery floss may be substituted)

All colors are customizable based on personal preference. Additional materials include a small amount of polyester fiberfill for stuffing and shaping, and a tapestry needle for finishing and embroidery details.

Pattern Details

The downloadable PDF pattern includes complete written instructions with a full abbreviations guide, making it accessible for intermediate crocheters. The pattern provides step-by-step directions for constructing each component of the Scarecrow character and assembling them into the finished bookmark design.
