Product Description
There were no hourglass shaped burp cloths in crochet patterns when I was searching for a gift for a friend's baby shower. I decided to buckle down and figure it out! Paige's Burp Cloth (named for my daughter) was "born" and is very classic and functional. I used 100% cotton yarn in worsted/aran weight but this can also be worked up in a DK or sport weight yarn and come out very close to size. You can work this in one color many! I've done a few in varigated yarns as well. The pattern features video tutorial links for special stitches, a detailed materials list, and well written instructions. Pattern has been tested for accuracy.
Paige's Burp Cloth by Sunflower Cottage Crochet
What is Being Made
Paige's Burp Cloth is a practical baby accessory designed for use during feeding and burping. This crocheted burp cloth is part of the Paige collection by designer Sunflower Cottage Crochet, named after the designer's daughter. The finished piece measures approximately 15 inches long with a width of 6 inches at the middle (shortest width) and 8½ inches at the rows, making it an appropriately sized cloth for infant care.
Materials
This burp cloth is crafted using 100% cotton yarn, such as I Love This Cotton, which provides optimal texture and absorbency for a baby care product. The pattern calls for a G-4mm crochet hook. The choice of cotton yarn is intentional, as cotton offers superior absorbency compared to synthetic fibers, making it ideal for a burp cloth that will be exposed to moisture during use.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This is an intermediate-level crochet project that employs fundamental crochet techniques and stitches. The pattern utilizes double crochet (dc) stitches as a primary stitch. An important technique featured in this pattern involves working into the back "hump" of the starting chain rather than the traditional top loops. This specialized method creates a much neater and more finished edge when beginning the project, improving the overall appearance and quality of the completed burp cloth.
Pattern Construction Notes
- Chain 2 at the beginning counts as a double crochet
- Chain 1 at the beginning does not count as a stitch
- Work stitches into the back "hump" of the starting chain for a neater edge
This intermediate-level project is suitable for crocheters with basic stitch knowledge who are ready to work on functional items with practical applications.
