Product Description

A fun scarflette knit from end to end, widening as you get towards the center, then narrowing again. A great way to use a special skein of sock yarn.

Errata for pattern. The pattern as written is NOT a mirror image of itself. If this bothers you (and you know if it will or not!) then, DO NOT repeat "D" a second time as listed on Page 4. Simply work the D,F pattern 7 times as written then go on to work pattern E 8 times leaving out the extra D repeat. This will give you a mirror image of the first side.

Happy Knitting!

JJ Scarflette by Threebagsfulled

What is Being Made

The JJ Scarflette is an original knit design by Threebagsfulled (©Hilary Designs 2010) that creates a lightweight, versatile neck accessory. This scarflette is knit from end to end rather than using the more traditional top-down construction method, offering a unique approach to scarflette design. The finished piece is suitable for intermediate knitters seeking a straightforward yet engaging project.

Construction Method and Techniques

This scarflette employs a distinctive end-to-end knitting approach, which differs from conventional scarflette patterns that typically begin at the top and work downward. The design uses two primary stitch patterns that are worked repeatedly throughout the piece, creating visual interest and texture variation. The pattern incorporates yarn overs for shaping and stitch increases, along with knit-together decreases that work in combination with yarn overs to create openwork sections. Circular needles in two sizes facilitate the growing width of the piece as stitches accumulate during construction.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

The JJ Scarflette utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined into two distinct repeating patterns:

  • Basic stitches: knit, purl, yarn over (yo), and knit two together (k2tog)
  • Pattern A: worked 17 times, featuring yarn overs for increases, stockinette stitch sections, and garter stitch edging
  • Pattern B: worked 9 times, incorporating paired decreases and yarn overs that create a lace-like effect alternating with solid knit rows

The patterns are bookended by a simple foundation row and initial setup rows, with garter stitch borders maintained throughout to frame the design.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The JJ Scarflette requires approximately 440 yards of sock weight yarn (typically categorized as 3-ply or 4-ply). Knitters will need two circular needles—one 24 inches and one 32 inches—to accommodate the increasing stitch count as the scarflette expands. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and two stitch markers to track pattern repeats. The sock weight yarn choice ensures a delicate, drapeable finished garment suitable for layering.

Difficulty Level

This design is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it accessible to knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with pattern repeats and manage increasing stitch counts across circular needles. The straightforward stitch vocabulary combined with structured pattern sections provides a manageable learning experience without excessive complexity.
