Product Description

A reversible crescent shaped top-down shawl, which uses short rows to create a broad yet shallow shape. The subtle lace decoration evokes the shape and form of bird’s wings.

Sizes Small [Large]

Finished Measurements 12 (18)” / 30 (45) cm from CO edge to tip along the centre stitch, 60 (75)” / 150 (190) cm wingspan along top edge. Measurements taken after blocking.

Yarn Fingering weight (4 Ply), [DK (8 Ply)] The pattern will work best in solid or semi-solid colourways. Variegated yarns will work but may obscure the lace details in the edging. Shorter sequence striping yarns (such as Zauberball or similar) are not recommended as the short rows in the initial sections may cause unwelcome colour transitions. Longer transitional gradients (shading from light to dark or similar) would also work well.

Flightless Reversible Crescent Shawl by K.M. Bedigan

What is Being Made

Flightless is a reversible crescent-shaped top-down shawl designed by K.M. Bedigan. The shawl features a broad yet shallow silhouette that evokes the graceful form and movement of bird wings through subtle lace decoration. This intermediate-level knitting project is available as a downloadable PDF pattern and can be crafted in two different yarn weights to suit various preferences and finished size requirements.

Shawl Design and Construction

The shawl uses a top-down construction method, beginning at the crescent's tip and expanding outward. The distinctive shape is achieved through the strategic use of short rows, a fundamental knitting technique that allows the designer to create asymmetrical shaping without increasing stitches in traditional ways. Short rows work by knitting partway across a row, then turning and working back in the opposite direction, gradually building fabric in specific sections. This technique is essential to creating the shawl's characteristic broad wingspan while maintaining a shallow depth.

Lace Details and Visual Elements

The pattern incorporates subtle lace stitch work throughout the design, with decorative lace edging that reinforces the wing-inspired aesthetic. The lace elements are best appreciated in solid or semi-solid yarn colorways, which allow the delicate stitch definition to remain visible and striking. Variegated yarns may obscure the lace details, and short-repeat striping yarns such as Zauberball are not recommended, as the color transitions created by short rows in the initial sections could disrupt the intended visual flow.

For those seeking additional visual interest, longer transitional gradient yarns that shade gradually from light to dark tones work particularly well with this pattern, complementing the organic, flowing aesthetic.

Yarn and Materials

Flightless accommodates two yarn weight options:

  • Fingering weight (4 Ply): 400 [550] yards / 366 [500] meters
  • DK weight (8 Ply): Approximately 400 [550] yards / 366 [500] meters (yardage scales with weight)

For the optional two-color version, yardage is divided as follows:

  • Colour A: 140 [175] yards / 130 [160] meters
  • Colour B: 260 [375] yards / 240 [340] meters

The pattern calls for a 3.5 mm / US 4 circular needle in the appropriate length for the chosen size.

Finished Measurements

The shawl is offered in two sizes:

  • Small: 12" / 30 cm from cast-on edge to tip along the center stitch, with a wingspan of 60" / 150 cm
  • Large: 18" / 45 cm from cast-on edge to tip along the center stitch, with a wingspan of 75" / 190 cm

Skill Level

Flightless is rated as an intermediate knitting project. Knitters should be comfortable with fundamental techniques including cast-on methods, basic stitches, and shaping. The primary challenge lies in mastering short-row shaping, which requires attention to technique to avoid gaps or twisted stitches at turning points. Familiarity with reading lace charts and maintaining consistent tension throughout the project is beneficial.

Pattern Format

This pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, making it immediately accessible for digital reference or printing for use during knitting.
