What is Being Made

The Dorsey Duckling is an intermediate-level knitted toy duck designed by Pat Alinejad. This charming stuffed toy measures 10 inches (25 centimeters) when seated and 12 inches (30 centimeters) when standing. The duckling is constructed from multiple knitted components that are assembled together to create a three-dimensional plush companion suitable for children and collectors.

Construction Method and Techniques

The Dorsey Duckling is created using a combination of knitting techniques that build the toy's various anatomical parts. The primary body structure—including the feet, legs, tail, and main body—is knitted as a single continuous piece, which provides structural integrity and reduces the number of seams requiring assembly. The head with integrated beak and the wings are knitted separately and then attached to the body during the making-up process.

The pattern employs the knit into the front and back of the same stitch (KFB) technique for creating increases, allowing the designer to shape the duckling's form and add volume where needed for a three-dimensional appearance.

Stitches and Yarn Specifications

This project uses Aran/Worsted weight yarn worked on 3.5mm (US size 4) straight knitting needles. The pattern calls for two yarn weights:

• Yarn A: 100 grams/150 metres of fuzzy or textured Aran/Worsted weight for the main body, creating a soft, plush appearance. Suggested yarn options include Peter Pan Precious, Red Heart Hygge Fur Yarn, or similar chunky-weight fuzzy yarns.
• Yarn B: 50 grams/90 metres of plain Aran/Worsted weight for the feet, beaks, and hats, providing contrast and definition to these features.

The designer notes that while a fuzzy yarn is used in the original design, the Dorsey Duckling can be successfully knitted from plain Aran/Worsted weight yarn throughout and will be equally appealing.

Materials and Finishing

Beyond yarn and needles, the project requires toy safety materials including toy safety stuffing to fill the knitted body and 14mm toy safety eyes for the duckling's face. A yarn sewing needle is essential for assembling the separate pieces and securing all components together during the making-up phase.
