Cobblestone Shawl by Janina Kallio

What Is Being Made

Cobblestone is an elegant crescent-shaped knit shawl inspired by the historic streets of Old Paris. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a sophisticated accessory that drapes effortlessly across the shoulders, combining timeless design with wearable comfort. The shawl features a distinctive elongated crescent silhouette that flatters various body types and styling preferences.

Design Features and Construction

The shawl's design centers on a striking central mesh section that forms the visual foundation of the piece. Two columns of yarn over increases expand outward from the neckline, creating the characteristic crescent shape that gives this shawl its elegant drape. This strategic increase placement allows the shawl to sit naturally on the shoulders without bunching or shifting during wear.

A delicate eyelet detail adorns the border, adding vintage charm and visual interest to the finished edge. This refined finishing touch complements the minimalist elegance of the overall design and enhances the Old Paris aesthetic that inspired the pattern.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

Cobblestone employs several fundamental knitting techniques that make it suitable for intermediate-level crafters:

  • Yarn overs create the mesh sections and eyelet details throughout the shawl
  • Increases worked in columns expand the fabric strategically from the neckline outward
  • Charted and written instructions provide flexibility for different learning styles and preferences
  • Stitch markers help organize the pattern sections and maintain accuracy during construction

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for one skein of fingering weight yarn, making this an excellent project for using single skeins from your stash or exploring premium fingering weight options. The pattern accommodates both 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, offering flexibility in fiber selection.

For knitters with additional yarn available, the pattern includes instructions for creating a larger shawl by repeating rows 1-2 additional times. This scalability feature allows crafters to customize the finished size while maintaining the shawl's elegant proportions. When expanding the pattern, knitters should ensure an odd number of stitches before the first marker and an even number of stitches after the second marker before transitioning to the border section.

Pattern Format

Cobblestone is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, featuring both written row-by-row instructions and charted stitch diagrams. This dual-format approach accommodates different knitting preferences and skill levels, making the pattern accessible to a wide range of crafters.
