Product Description

Super-chunky doesn’t necessarily mean super-clunky. When you knit a lace pattern with very bulky yarn, the result is the best of both worlds; cozy thick and warm yet sweet and lacy. This beret is super-fast to knit too, making it a great go-to gift hat. Indulge yourself and knit one in each of your favorite Rasta colors. The Birdseye beret is a squooshy hat that knits up quickly in a super bulky yarn. The bulk of the yarn provides texture and the yarn is highlighted with the simple twisted rib brim and eyelet fabric in the top.

Construction Notes This hat is a simple and very quick knit. A few rows of twisted rib create the brim and then the slouchy hat is worked in a simple 6 stitch lace repeat. The decreases continue the pattern right to the very top using 12 stitches per repeat.

If you want to make a worsted weight version check out the modifications at the [Tangled blog][1].

What Is Being Made

The Birdseye Beret is a classic knitted hat featuring a lace pattern crown combined with a ribbed band. This design is available in three sizes: child (16" circumference), adult small (20" circumference), and adult large (24" circumference). The beret offers a sophisticated silhouette with a depth ranging from 6.75" for the child size to 9.75" for the adult large size. This is an ideal quick-knit project, making it perfect for last-minute gift giving or creating multiple versions in different colorways.

Techniques Used

The Birdseye Beret employs a combination of fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques. The construction begins with a twisted rib band worked in the round, providing structure and elasticity at the hat's base. The crown features a lace pattern, which creates an elegant openwork design that showcases the yarn's texture while maintaining the warmth and coziness of a bulky-weight knit. The pattern notes emphasize that working lace with very bulky yarn produces a balanced result: the fabric remains thick and warm while avoiding a clunky appearance. Swatching is recommended to verify gauge before beginning the main project, particularly for the lace pattern section.

Stitches Used

  • 1x1 Twisted Rib: Used for the ribbed band, this stitch creates vertical columns of texture that provide stretch and recovery at the hat's opening
  • Lace Pattern: The crown features a lace motif worked over rows 2 and 4 (when working flat for swatching purposes), with purl rows on rows 1 and 3, creating an openwork design that is both decorative and structurally sound in bulky yarn

Materials

This pattern calls for Malabrigo Rasta, a 100% wool yarn available in multiple colorways including Paris Night. The yardage requirements vary by size: the child size requires 54 yards (1 skein), the adult small size requires 85 yards (1 skein), and the adult large size requires 123 yards (2 skeins). Each skein of Malabrigo Rasta weighs 150 grams and contains 90 yards.

Needles required include US 11 (8 mm) circular needles in 24" length and matching double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working in the round, or the size needed to obtain proper gauge. A tapestry needle is also needed for weaving in ends.

Gauge

Achieving proper gauge is essential for this project. The lace pattern should measure 7.5 stitches and 12 rows to 4 inches (10 cm). The 1x1 twisted rib band should measure 8 stitches and 12 rows to 4 inches (10 cm). Swatching the lace pattern flat and blocking it to check gauge before beginning the main project is recommended to ensure the finished beret meets the intended measurements.
