What is Being Made

Basic knit socks are a foundational hosiery project designed to fit women's UK shoe sizes 3/4 through 7/8, with adjustable foot length to accommodate various adult sizes. The finished socks feature a leg and cuff length of 14 cm (5.5 in), with foot lengths available in three options: approximately 22.5 cm (8.8 in), 24 cm (9.4 in), or 25 cm (9.8 in). This beginner-friendly pattern allows crafters to customize the foot length beyond the provided sizing options to achieve a perfect fit for any adult wearer.

Techniques Used

This knitting pattern employs circular knitting techniques, which are essential for creating seamless socks worked in the round. Crafters may choose between two methods: working with double-pointed needles (DPNs) or using circular needles with the magic loop technique. The magic loop method requires circular needles that are a minimum of 80 cm (31 in) long. Working in the round eliminates the need for seaming and creates a more professional finish typical of quality handmade hosiery.

An important technical consideration is tension consistency when working in the round versus in rows. The pattern specifically recommends that crafters create their tension swatch in the round, as tension may differ between these two working methods. Tension and Sizing

The pattern specifies a tension of 30 stitches by 42 rows to a 10 cm square, measured over stocking stitch and worked on 3 mm needles. Achieving correct tension is critical for proper sock fit and is particularly important when working in the round, as tension may vary from flat knitting.
