Anchor Aromatic Plants Egg Cosies – Free Embroidery PDF Pattern (Design No. 0060044-00901-12)

Designed by Anchor Studio and available as a free downloadable PDF, this charming intermediate-level embroidery pattern guides you through creating a set of six decorative egg cosies featuring aromatic plant motifs. Published by MEZ GmbH under the Anchor brand, this project combines classic cross stitch embroidery with simple sewing construction to produce a coordinated set of functional table accessories — perfect for Easter celebrations or everyday breakfast settings.

What Is Being Made

The finished items are six egg cosies — small fabric covers designed to keep boiled eggs warm at the table. Each cosy is constructed from a combination of white evenweave embroidery fabric, a cotton backing fabric (such as gingham), and felt lining sheets for insulation and structure. The embroidered panels measure approximately 5 x 5 cm each, making them a compact yet satisfying project ideal for embroiderers who enjoy small-scale, detailed needlework.

Embroidery Design and Motifs

The pattern features aromatic plant motifs worked in a botanical style. The designs are stitched onto evenweave fabric and are sized to fit neatly onto each individual cosy panel. The motif style is consistent with Anchor Studio's tradition of nature-inspired needlework, offering a fresh and decorative finish suited to kitchen and dining textiles.

Techniques Used

  • Cross stitch — the primary embroidery technique used throughout the pattern. Cross stitch is worked in two stages: the lower diagonal stitch is worked first from left to right across a row, and the upper diagonal stitch is then worked from right to left to complete each cross. This two-pass method ensures neat, uniform stitches across the fabric surface.
  • Cross stitch over 2 fabric threads — each cross stitch is worked over 2 fabric threads each way, giving the embroidery a slightly larger, well-defined appearance on the evenweave ground.
  • Basic sewing construction — once the embroidery is complete, the cosies are assembled by combining the embroidered evenweave panels with cotton backing fabric rectangles and felt lining pieces, sewn together with matching sewing thread.

Stitches Used

  • Cross stitch — the sole embroidery stitch specified in this pattern, worked consistently with 2 strands of stranded cotton over 2 evenweave threads in each direction.

Materials – Thread

The pattern calls for Anchor Stranded Cotton (8m skeins), worked with 2 strands throughout. The following colours are required, with 1 skein of each:

  • Anchor Stranded Cotton #226
  • Anchor Stranded Cotton #241
  • Anchor Stranded Cotton #246
  • Anchor Stranded Cotton #258
  • Anchor Stranded Cotton #875
  • Anchor Stranded Cotton #876
  • Anchor Stranded Cotton #1076

Materials – Fabric and Notions

  • White evenweave fabric — approximately 60 x 15 cm, with a thread count of 112 threads per 10 cm. This is the ground fabric for the cross stitch embroidery panels.
  • Cotton backing fabric — approximately 60 x 30 cm of a matching cotton fabric such as gingham, cut into 6 rectangles each measuring 20 x 15 cm. All measurements include seam allowance.
  • 3 felt sheets — each sheet is cut in half to yield pieces measuring approximately 15 x 20 cm, providing the insulating lining for each cosy.
  • Matching sewing thread — for assembling the fabric and felt layers.
