What you'll need

Product Description

Cables and texture shine in any yarn colour, but there is something about the way the texture deepens in shades of white, like footprints in snow. Debbie Bliss' new collection celebrates this fabulous shade from creamy ecru to chalk whites, and the Alaska jumper is a fabulous conglomeration of cables and diamond motifs with a high ribbed collar in gorgeously soft Falkland Aran. Knitted in pieces and seamed, Alaska is a deliciously rich and warm jumper that will keep you challenged, with absolutely delectable results!

Alaska Jumper – Knitting Pattern for Women in Debbie Bliss Falkland Aran

The Alaska Jumper is a beautifully crafted women's aran-weight knitting pattern designed by Debbie Bliss and worked in Debbie Bliss Falkland Aran yarn in Ecru 01. This is a substantial, textured pullover jumper featuring intricate cable and lace panel detailing, making it an ideal project for advanced knitters looking for a rewarding and wearable challenge. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF.

What Is Being Made

The Alaska is a classic women's pullover jumper worked from the bottom up in separate flat pieces that are subsequently seamed together. It features a richly textured front panel combining cables and decorative stitches set against a reverse stocking stitch background. The finished garment is designed to be a fitted-to-relaxed aran jumper with a generous bust and a defined sleeve length.

The pattern is sized to fit bust measurements of 81–86 cm, 92–97 cm, 102–107 cm, and 112–117 cm (32–34 in through 44–46 in), with finished bust measurements of 97, 103, 117, and 129 cm (38–50¾ in). The length to shoulder ranges from 62 to 68 cm (24½–26¾ in) depending on size, and the sleeve length is a consistent 45 cm / 17¾ in across all sizes.

Techniques Used

  • Bottom-up construction: The jumper is begun at the lower edges and worked upward toward the shoulders, a traditional approach that gives knitters clear shaping reference points.
  • Worked flat: All pieces — front, back, and sleeves — are knitted flat on straight needles, meaning knitters work right-side and wrong-side rows alternately rather than in the round.
  • Seamed finishing: The completed flat pieces are joined using seaming techniques, giving the garment structure and a neat, tailored finish.
  • Cable knitting: The pattern features a C4B cable (a 4-stitch back cable), which involves slipping 2 stitches onto a cable needle held at the back, knitting 2 stitches, then knitting the 2 held stitches from the cable needle. This creates the characteristic twisted rope effect central to aran knitwear.
  • Custom 3-stitch cable: A bespoke cable stitch defined as sl 1, k1, yfwd, k1, psso worked over 3 stitches, creating a refined, elongated twist unique to this design.
  • Lace-style yarnover detailing: The pattern panel incorporates yfwd (yarn forward) increases paired with decreases such as k2tog and sl 1, k1, psso to create delicate eyelet and directional lace effects woven through the cable panel.
  • Wrap 5 technique: A distinctive textural stitch defined as bringing the yarn forward, slipping 5 stitches to the right needle, taking the yarn back, slipping the same 5 stitches back to the left needle, and repeating — creating a gathered, wrapped bundle of stitches for decorative effect.
  • Reverse stocking stitch background: The main fabric of the jumper is worked in reverse stocking stitch (purl on the right side, knit on the wrong side), which throws the cable and lace panels into sharp relief.
  • M1P increase: A make-one purl increase is used for shaping, worked by picking up the loop between stitches from behind and purling into the front of it, maintaining the reverse stocking stitch fabric seamlessly.

Stitches Used

  • Reverse stocking stitch – the primary background fabric
  • C4B – 4-stitch back cable for classic aran rope effect
  • 3-stitch custom cablesl 1, k1, yfwd, k1, psso
  • Wrap
