854 Glymur – Women's Stranded Icelandic Pullover Knitting Pattern by Julie Turjoman

The 854 Glymur is a beautifully designed women's pullover knitting pattern created by Julie Turjoman and published under the Valley Yarns brand. Inspired by one of Iceland's most celebrated waterfalls, Glymur, this pattern brings a fresh, modern sensibility to the classic Icelandic yoke sweater tradition. It is available as a downloadable PDF and is rated advanced in difficulty, making it an excellent project for experienced knitters ready to take on colorwork and construction challenges.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a stranded colorwork pullover jumper for women, featuring a richly patterned yoke in the Icelandic tradition alongside several contemporary design updates. Key design details include:

  • Ribbed edges at the cuffs, hem, and neckline for a clean, polished finish
  • Modern split front details that give the garment a distinctive, updated look beyond a traditional Icelandic pullover
  • A stranded colorwork yoke worked with multiple contrast colors, echoing the flowing, layered beauty of the Glymur waterfall
  • Available in a wide range of sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, and 4XL
  • Finished bust measurements ranging from 32½ inches to 60 inches, with a recommended fit of ½ to 3 inches of positive ease
  • The sample shown is knitted in Size 37 inches

Construction Techniques

The Glymur pullover uses a combination of construction methods that reflect its advanced difficulty rating. Understanding these techniques will help knitters prepare for the project:

  • Bottom-up construction: The body is worked from the hem upward, a traditional approach that allows knitters to try on the garment as they go and adjust length before committing to the yoke
  • Worked in the round: The body is knitted seamlessly in the round up to the yoke, eliminating the need for side seams and creating a smooth, comfortable fabric
  • Stranded colorwork: Multiple colors are carried across rows simultaneously to create the patterned yoke. This technique, central to Icelandic knitting tradition, requires managing yarn tension carefully to keep the fabric elastic and even
  • Worked flat: Certain sections of the pattern — most likely related to the split front details — are worked flat (back and forth in rows), requiring knitters to be comfortable switching between in-the-round and flat knitting within the same project
  • Seamless construction: Where possible, the garment is constructed to minimize seaming, resulting in a refined, professional finish

Stitches Used

The Glymur pattern draws on a core set of knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Ribbing: Used at the hem, cuffs, and neckline to create stretchy, structured edges that frame the garment neatly
  • Stockinette stitch: The primary background stitch for the body, worked in the round to produce a smooth knit fabric
  • Stranded colorwork stitches: Knit stitches worked with multiple yarn colors held together, following a charted pattern across the yoke to create the signature Icelandic-inspired design

Materials – Yarn and Needles

The pattern is specifically designed for Valley Yarns Berkshire, a worsted weight single-ply yarn made from a luxurious blend of 85% Wool and 15% Alpaca. Each skein contains 100 grams and 141 yards. The wool-alpaca blend gives the fabric warmth, softness, and a subtle halo that enhances the richness of the colorwork. The pattern calls for four colors:

  • Main Color (MC): Valley Yarns Berkshire in #52 Stonewashed Heather — 5 (5, 6, 7, 8) (9, 10, 11) skeins depending
