Choosing acrylic yarn for the project in front of you

Acrylic is the yarn most British and American makers reach for when a project has to be big, washable and affordable at the same time. Pure acrylic versus a wool blend

Pure acrylic does not felt, does not shrink and does not interest moths, which is exactly why it goes into gifts for people who will not hand-wash anything. What it does not do is breathe or block sharply — a lace shawl in pure acrylic will not hold a crisp point the way wool does, and steam blocking must be done carefully because heat can permanently flatten the fibre.

Working with acrylic: three things that trip people up

First, acrylic has less spring than wool, so it can stretch and stay stretched. Blankets and cushion covers do not care; a fitted jumper does, and a swatch washed and dried the way you intend to treat the finished garment will tell you how much growth to expect. Second, acrylic squeaks on metal needles — bamboo or wooden needles give more grip and are kinder over long sessions. Third, avoid a hot iron entirely. A cool steam hover will relax a curling edge; direct heat will kill the fibre and the shine will not come back.
