Four ply on a 3-3.5mm hook gives the lightest, most wearable fabric; DK on a 4mm hook is faster and works well for structured tanks. Avoid heavy aran and chunky yarns for drapey styles, as the fabric becomes stiff and the garment hangs like cardboard. Pure cotton has no memory and will grow lengthwise with wear, so a cotton blend with a little elastane or a firm tension is worth considering for anything close-fitting. Tension, swatching and fabric

Crochet swatches matter more than most people admit, because hook size changes the drape as much as the size. Work a swatch at least 15cm square, wash and dry it exactly as you will treat the finished garment, then measure. If the fabric feels stiff, go up a hook size; if you can see through it in an unwanted way, go down. Hanging the swatch with a peg and a weight for an hour shows you how much the top will lengthen on the body.

Techniques and finishing

Expect foundation double crochet, working into the back bump of a chain, increases and decreases for armhole and neck shaping, joining motifs as you go, and picked-up edgings around the neckline and armholes. That edging is what makes the difference between a homemade look and a finished garment: two or three rounds of double crochet worked at a slightly firmer tension stop the neckline gaping. Block the pieces before seaming, use mattress stitch or a whip stitch through the outer loops, and weave in ends along the seam allowance.

Care and seasonal wear

Cotton and linen tops wash well at 30 degrees in a bag, but dry them flat rather than hanging, or the shoulders will stretch. A crochet top layers beautifully over a plain vest or a slip if the fabric is open, which extends the season well into autumn.
