What to make with 4 ply yarn

Hook size and tension

Most 4 ply crochet works on a 2.5–3.5mm hook, with 3mm and 3.5mm the commonest. Lace and openwork are often deliberately worked on a larger hook than the ball band suggests — a 4mm hook with 4 ply gives an airy fabric with beautiful drape, which is exactly what a shawl wants. Tight, dense fabric for bags and baskets goes the other way, down to 2.5mm. Because the stitches are small, tension errors compound quickly: a difference of half a stitch per 10cm turns into six or seven centimetres across an adult bust, so swatch in the actual stitch pattern and block the swatch before measuring.

Fibre matters at this weight

Merino and merino-nylon blends give softness with enough elasticity to keep stitches even; they suit shawls and garments and are usually machine washable in superwash form. Cotton 4 ply is crisp, cool and has no give at all, so it holds intricate stitch patterns perfectly but is less forgiving of uneven tension — ideal for doilies, bags and structured summer tops. Silk and silk blends give shine and a heavy, fluid drape. Alpaca is warm and drapey but grows with wear, so size accordingly. Mohair blends can be held together with a 4 ply for a halo without extra weight.

How much yarn, and how long it takes

A triangular shawl typically needs 400–800m; a baby cardigan 300–500m; an adult summer top 800–1,200m; a full-length cardigan 1,200m and up. There's no getting away from it — 4 ply takes longer than aran. The trick is to choose a project scaled to your patience. A shawl or a baby garment gives you the finish and detail of fine crochet without the months a full adult jumper demands, and shawls have the enormous advantage of not needing to fit anybody.

Techniques you'll practise

Reading charted lace, keeping accurate stitch counts across long rows, chain-space work, picots and clusters, increasing on the diagonal for a triangular shawl, and joining new yarn invisibly mid-row. Use a row counter or a running tally, and place stitch markers every twenty stitches on long foundation chains — recounting 300 chains is nobody's idea of an evening well spent.

Blocking makes the project

With 4 ply, blocking is transformative rather than tidying. Soak the finished piece in lukewarm water with wool wash, press out the water in a towel, then pin out on blocking mats — using blocking wires or a taut thread along straight edges, and a pin into every point on a shawl edging. Leave it to dry completely. Lace that looked crumpled and mean will open into something you can see through. Wash finished garments gently, dry flat, and re-block occasionally.
