6 must-have sewing patterns for Spring/Summer

We've been having a sneaky peek at the Spring/Summer 2019 sewing trends and this year it's all about cycling shorts, blazers and the odd hat. Cycling shorts may not be your thing, but pairing a blazer with some ‘fitted’ shorts is now the hottest ticket for the sunny weather. Fendi, Prada, Stella McCartney, Cavallai and WGSN (the trend forecasting gurus) are paying homage to the look spawned by Chanel back in the 1990s. We may not all be built to wear cycling shorts, and sewing that stretchy lycra can sometimes be hard to handle, but a tailor-made blazer is a thing of beauty that will last forever. For fabrics and prints it’s a free-for-all with beige being on trend, right through to bold, bright 90s prints. You can also get creative with as many trims as you can get your hands on, with 'Boho-chic' still being at the fore (think Coachella fringing) as well as oodles of lace paired with stone washed denim.

Sew Over It Shorts

You don't get more fitted than a pattern from Sew Over It. With gorgeous vintage lines, you can use bold prints, dainty florals or a retro polka dot to make these your own. This pattern doubles up as trousers too and is classier than any pair of cycling shorts you'll find!

McCall's Unisex Jacket

This blazer is a great gender neutral garment to see you through the seasons, and it's perfectly on trend for this summer (and for those of us that still dream of Carrie's wardrobe in Sex and the City, this could be stolen right from her closet!). Whip it up in any colour or material that you like, with a neat little lapel and a perfectly finished pocket even Coco Chanel would be impressed.

McCall's Misses Cardigan

This boxy cardigan is right on trend for spring and summer and is a great substitute if you don't want to tackle all the sharp edges and interfacing of a blazer. You could make it in a soft jersey for a slouchy vibe, whip it up in denim with some contrast piping, or even add fringing to the bottom to give it a festival feel.

McCall's Misses Jacket
