Forget the beanie, the beret is back! 13 must-have beret patterns

The classic beanie has long reigned supreme as the essential cosy wardrobe staple you need for the winter months. But it looks like the beanie is about to be beat and the beret is making a comeback!

Far from a cliché, the beret is a Parisian style staple that adds an effortless elegance to any outfit, but long before it became the quintessential French fashion accessory, the beret had a history all of its own. It wasn't until the 1900s that the beret became fashionable with artists, actresses, poets and playwrights all wearing berets. But before the beret was even called a beret, it was worn primarily by Europe's poorest. Throughout the berets long and illustrious history it has also been political and a symbol of revolution, from Fidel Castro to the Black Panther's, the beret has never just been a fashionable accessory, with a political history dating back to the 1500s - beret's are far from basic!

1. Brigitte beret
