Riley Blake Playtime Quilt Pattern – Downloadable PDF by Penny Rose Studio

The Riley Blake Playtime quilt pattern is a free downloadable PDF designed by Penny Rose Studio and published by Riley Blake Designs. This cheerful, intermediate-level quilting project produces a finished quilt measuring 41" x 47", making it an ideal size for a child's lap quilt, a crib covering, or a playful throw. The design is built around a 5" x 5" finished block size and is specifically created to showcase the Toy Chest 3 fabric collection by Penny Rose Studio, a whimsical print line perfectly suited to nurseries and children's rooms.

About the Design

The Playtime quilt features a layout of individually unique blocks, meaning each block is intentionally different from the others in terms of fabric placement. This scrappy, playful approach gives the quilt a lively, dynamic appearance that suits the spirit of the Toy Chest 3 fabric collection. The blocks are separated by sashing, which adds structure and visual breathing room between the colorful prints. Sashing strips are cut from a Riley White Solid fabric, providing a clean, classic contrast that allows the prints to stand out.

Block Construction – The Chain Block

The primary block used throughout the Playtime quilt is known as the Chain Block, constructed using the classic Nine-Patch method. This is one of the most foundational and recognizable block structures in quilting, making it an excellent choice for quilters who have moved beyond beginner projects and are comfortable with precise cutting and consistent seam allowances.

How the Chain Block Is Made

  • Each block is assembled from 5 print 1½" squares and 4 Riley White Solid 1½" squares.
  • These nine small squares are sewn together in a Nine-Patch Unit, alternating print and white solid squares in a classic checkerboard-style arrangement.
  • Because each block uses a different print fabric, no two blocks in the finished quilt are identical, creating a charming scrappy effect across the entire quilt top.
  • All measurements include a standard ¼" seam allowance, which is the quilting industry standard.
  • All pieces are sewn with right sides together unless otherwise stated in the pattern instructions.

Sashing Details

The quilt uses sashing rectangles cut from the Riley White Solid fabric to frame and separate the individual blocks. Quilters will need to:

  • Cut 11 strips at 1½" x WOF (width of fabric) from the Riley White Solid.
  • Sub-cut those strips into 71 rectangles measuring 1½" x 5½" for use as sashing between blocks.

This sashing technique is a traditional quilting method that adds both visual separation and a cohesive, organized structure to what would otherwise be a busy, print-heavy layout. The white sashing also echoes the white squares within each Nine-Patch block, tying the overall design together beautifully.

Fabric Requirements and Materials

The Playtime pattern is designed to work with specific Riley Blake Designs fabrics, making it a great companion project for quilters who have purchased the Toy Chest 3 collection. The required materials include:

  • 1 Toy Chest 3 5-inch Stacker (style number 5-6760-42) – a pre-cut pack of 5" squares that provides the assorted print fabrics used throughout the blocks.
  • 1/8 yard (15 cm) of green dot fabric (C6763 Green) for accent use.
  • 3/4 yard (70 cm) of red fabric for additional design elements.
  • Riley White Solid fabric for the Nine-Patch block squares and all sashing rectangles.
