Christmas Bauble no. 1 by Knao Knits
What Is Being Made
Christmas Bauble no. 1 is a knitted decorative bauble designed as a festive holiday ornament. This finished bauble measures approximately 8.5cm to 9cm (3.35" to 3.55") in diameter, making it an ideal size for Christmas tree decoration. The design is part of a collection where multiple baubles can be created using the same yarn and needles, allowing crafters to build a coordinated set of festive decorations.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several essential techniques to create a three-dimensional ornament. The bauble is constructed using the in-the-round method on double pointed needles, which allows for seamless circular knitting. The pattern incorporates increasing to shape the bauble into its spherical form, and crafters must pay careful attention to tension during these increases to maintain proper sizing. The design also features cable work, which requires additional care to avoid pulling stitches too tightly. The bauble is worked as a complete piece without seaming, creating a smooth, professional finish suitable for display.
Stitches Used
The Christmas Bauble no. 1 pattern utilizes multiple stitch patterns to create visual interest and texture variation:
- Stocking stitch – a fundamental knit stitch pattern that creates a smooth, classic appearance
- Moss stitch – a textured stitch pattern that adds dimensional detail to the bauble
- Cable stitches – decorative twisted stitches that add visual complexity and require careful tension management
Different stitch patterns may be used across the collection of baubles, allowing each ornament to have its own unique character while maintaining consistent sizing through proper tension control.
Materials Required
This project is designed to be worked with chunky weight yarn, which allows for quick completion and creates a substantial, durable ornament. The pattern is worked on one set of 5 double pointed knitting needles, which are essential for working in-the-round without seams. The suggested needle size should be adjusted based on individual knitter tension – those who knit tightly may need to size up, while loose knitters may need to size down. Crafters have the flexibility to use different yarn weights and needle sizes entirely if they wish to create baubles in alternative sizes.
Tension Specifications
Achieving the correct bauble size depends on maintaining accurate tension throughout the project. For stocking stitch, the target tension is 17 stitches and 22 rows over a 10cm (4") square. For moss stitch, the target tension is 16 stitches and 28 rows over a 10cm (4") square. Careful attention to tension is especially important when working increases and cables, as overly tight stitches in these areas will result in a bauble that is smaller than intended.
