15 free and frightening Halloween crochet patterns

Published on October 1, 2026 by Ailish

Every pattern below is a free PDF download, and every one is live on LoveCrafts right now: 15 Halloween crochet patterns for toys, pumpkins, wreaths, hats and one swashbuckling throw. Some take an evening and some deserve a head start, so we've sorted them by time and noted the yarn weight, hook and (where the designer says) whether the pattern is written in UK or US terms. How to pick the right pattern

Tonight: the ghost, the candy corn, the ghost key ring and the spooky lollipop cover are small, quick and good for scraps.

This weekend: the Boo! toys, the plush pumpkins, the witch hat, the black cat and the Frankenstein hat.

Start now: the two wreaths, the cottage pumpkin tapestry and the pirate throw are the big makes. The throw is 60 x 60 inches, so it needs weeks, not days.

A note on terms: a UK double crochet is a US single crochet. Most of the designers here write in US terms, so check before you start. We've flagged each one below where the pattern says.

1. Boo! Halloween toy collection

One free ebook, four characters: Boo the friendly ghost, Oscar the bat, Pips the pumpkin and Bernard the dinosaur, all designed by Irene Strange in Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran. Each piece is worked in continuous rounds with no joining, so there's no seam line to hide. They're rated intermediate. Cotton holds the stitch definition on the small parts like Oscar's fangs and Pips' leaf curl.

2. Plush pumpkins

The squishy pumpkins that are everywhere this year. You only need chain, single crochet and half double crochet; the ridges come from working in the back loop. The pattern gives several sizes, so make a whole patch. US terms, step-by-step photos.

3. Fuzzy pumpkin

A faux-fur pumpkin, about 4 inches tall and 8 inches wide, worked on a 10mm hook. Beginner-friendly: the body is one piece, then the stem and tendril are added. With faux fur you can't see your stitches, so count by feel and use a stitch marker at the start of every round.

4. Cottage pumpkin tapestry

A farmhouse-style wall hanging in warm autumn colours with 3D leaf appliqués on top. The pattern includes a tapestry graph, full written instructions and video tutorials. It suits makers who want Halloween decor that can stay up until Bonfire Night.

5. Crochet ghost

A little amigurumi ghost to clip on a key ring, a bag or a coat. Make a handful and string them into a garland, or give them as party favours. Written in UK terms, and quick enough that you can make a whole batch before the 31st.

6. Cute candy corn

A 4-inch candy corn that works in any yarn with the right hook (the designer used a chunky). Beginner level, though you'll practise magic rings, invisible decreases and colour changes along the way. US terms.

7. Spooky lollipop cover

A little ghost-style cover that slips over a round lollipop, so it's a trick-or-treat sweet and a toy in one. Made in one piece from the top down to the frilly skirt; the arms are sewn on. The sample uses DK cotton and a 3mm hook, so Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK is a natural fit. US terms with step-by-step photos.

8. Witch of the woods pointy hat

A tiny witch hat, made in one piece from the tip to the brim, with separate leaves laid over the tip. It's from the same designers as the spooky lollipop and uses the same DK cotton and 3mm hook, so one set of colours covers both. US terms.

9. Halloween black cat

A 6-inch black cat worked in a continuous spiral using only chain, slip stitch and single crochet with increases and decreases. The sample is worsted weight, and the size changes with your yarn, so a DK cat sits nicely next to the lollipops. Use a stitch marker: black yarn hides the start of the round.

10. Frankenstein hat

A green Frankenstein hat for little ones, sized from newborn up to child/youth, so it covers the whole family of trick-or-treaters. Worsted weight yarn, H and K hooks (5mm and 6.5mm), and the hair is loop stitch. The pattern links to stitch tutorials. Intermediate.

11. Spider web dream catcher

A 45cm spider web worked row by row inside a hoop, then decorated with ribbons, beads or tiny spiders. Rated easy. It uses light DK yarn and a 4mm hook, and the designer lists Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK as a suitable yarn. US terms.

12. Circle of skulls wreath

Eight crocheted skulls, each 4 inches wide and 5 inches tall, fixed to a wire wreath form with crocheted tabs. The eye sockets and nose are worked on the wrong side, which gives them their hollow look. Hooks F and G (3.75mm and 4mm). Intermediate.

13. Superstitious black cat wreath

A cat-face wreath 18 x 25 inches in black, pumpkin and purple: big enough to fill a front door. The head is waffle stitch for texture and the ears are worked in continuous rounds, so there's no seam. Intermediate, and good practice if waffle stitch is new to you.

14. Ghost key ring

Our original 2018 list included this little ghost, and it's still one of the quickest makes here. Hook it on your keys, a school bag or a pumpkin bucket.

15. Pirate throw

Not every Halloween costume is a ghost. This 60 x 60 inch throw in red, black and white has a pirate face complete with five steel rings for earrings. It uses double crochet and reverse single crochet, so it's an intermediate make and the biggest project on this list. Start now if you want it on the sofa by the 31st.
