Product Description
Heidi Kirrmaier created a wonderfully clever and good-looking wrap/scarf for knitters called Windward. Zoe's Lace is my tribute to her fun design.
Zoe's Lace is a combination of three stitch patterns of lace, and it is formed by crocheting 8 triangles. Each triangle is attached to the one before it. You never have to seam or cut yarn. You just keep on going. The ultimate shape is asymmetrical.
The wrap is 72 inches (183cm) tip-to-tip and 16 inches (41cm) at the widest point.
The following stitches were used: chain, single crochet, double crochet, triple crochet, half double crochet two together, and slip stitch.

What Is Being Made
Zoe's Lace is a crocheted scarf and shawl design created by independent designer Julie Blagojevich. This downloadable crochet pattern produces an elegant lace accessory that transforms significantly through blocking. The finished piece measures 56 inches in length by 15 inches at the widest point before blocking, and expands to 72 inches in length by 16 inches after blocking, creating a dramatic drape and lace definition characteristic of delicate openwork garments.
Design Inspiration and Concept
Zoe's Lace draws inspiration from "Windward" by Heidi Kirrmaier, incorporating similar design principles into an intermediate-level crochet project. The pattern utilizes geometric triangle construction as its foundational building block, a common technique in lace shawl design that allows for progressive increases and the development of intricate stitch patterns.
Crochet Techniques Used
This intermediate-level project employs several fundamental crochet techniques essential to creating delicate lace work:
- Foundation chain and turning chains: The pattern begins with a foundation chain of 4, establishing the base for subsequent rows
- Increase rows: Strategic increases are incorporated to expand the width of the triangular sections, with increases worked into the bumpy (wrong) side of turning chains for textural variation
- Stitch combination: The pattern alternates between single crochet and double crochet stitches within the same row to create visual interest and lace definition
- Row-by-row construction: The design is built through sequential rows with consistent turning and directional changes
- Blocking: Post-blocking dimensions differ significantly from pre-blocking measurements, indicating that wet blocking is essential to achieving the intended finished dimensions and lace definition
Stitches Used
Zoe's Lace incorporates the following crochet stitches:
- Chain (ch): Used for foundation and turning chains throughout the pattern
- Single Crochet (sc): A fundamental short stitch used to create dense sections and structure within the lace design
- Double Crochet (dc): A taller stitch alternated with single crochet to create openwork and visual rhythm
- Triple Crochet (tr): Included in the stitch abbreviations for potential use in pattern development
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Listed in abbreviations for joining or finishing techniques
- Half Double Crochet 2 Together (hdc2tog): A decrease stitch included in the pattern abbreviations for shaping
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern calls for Freia Fine Handpaints Lace Flux, a lace-weight yarn. The specified colorway is Seaglass, and the project requires 2 balls. Each ball contains 50 grams and yields 393 meters (430 yards), providing ample yardage for the complete scarf and shawl design.
Hook: A size "D" crochet hook measuring 3.25 millimeters is used throughout this project. This hook size is appropriate for lace-weight yarn and creates the delicate gauge required for the openwork design.
Notions: A darning needle is the only additional notional requirement, used for weaving in ends after completion.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 19 rows worked in pattern (combining single crochet and double crochet stitches) measuring 4 square inches. This gauge is critical for achieving the intended finished dimensions. The significant difference between pre-blocking and post-blocking measurements—from 56 inches to 72 inches in length—demonstrates the importance of proper blocking technique in lace crochet projects, as blocking opens up the stitches and allows the lace pattern to fully develop.
Difficulty Level
Zoe's Lace is classified as an intermediate-level crochet project. While it uses basic stitches such as single crochet and double crochet, the combination of these stitches within a lace pattern, along with the requirement for understanding gauge, blocking, and geometric construction, makes it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills and some experience with stitch variation and shaping.
