Product Description
This pattern is for an overlay mosaic crochet square that can be used in other types of projects, such as blankets, pillows, satchel bags, table mats, etc.
Any yarn or hook will work, depending on the desired size of the finished square. I used yarn weight of 4 with a 5.5 hook, which creates a square of 13.5” x 13”.
You will need at least 2 colors of yarn - one for the background and one for the Om sign. (I used up scraps for the background and switched colors for each background row.)
For projects using 2 colors, (one for the background & one for the featured design), you will need approximately 2 oz of each color for a worsted or aran (wt 4) type of yarn.
Pattern is in US crochet terms.
Zen Garden Mosaic Square - Om Sign Design
What Is Being Made
The Zen Garden Mosaic Square - Om Sign is a crochet cushion project featuring a decorative mosaic design centered around the Om symbol. This square design is part of Cyndie Birdsong's Zen Garden Mosaic Square series, created in February 2021. The finished piece works beautifully as a cushion cover or decorative accent for home décor, combining spiritual symbolism with contemporary fiber art techniques.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project uses crochet as its primary construction method, with a specialized focus on mosaic crochet techniques. Mosaic crochet is a method that creates interesting shapes and textures by strategically placing stitches to form visual patterns and designs. According to the pattern, mosaic crochet uses only two types of stitches in alternating rows, making it an accessible yet visually striking approach to creating detailed imagery in crochet work. While mosaic crochet can initially seem confusing when reading graph charts, this pattern is designed to be approachable for crocheters with intermediate experience and basic familiarity with stitch recognition and crochet terminology.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs mosaic crochet construction, which relies on a limited stitch palette to create its distinctive visual effects. The specific stitch combinations work together across rows to build the Om symbol design through strategic color and stitch placement rather than complex stitch variations.

- Yarn Weight: Aran or worsted weight yarn is suitable for this project, providing a medium-weight base that works well for cushion-sized pieces

Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While mosaic crochet itself is designed to be learnable, successful completion requires comfort with reading stitch abbreviations, understanding crochet terminology, and the ability to follow graph charts. Prior crochet experience is recommended before beginning this project.
