Product Description
This pattern is for a mosaic crochet square that can be used in other types of projects, such as blankets, pillows, satchel bags, table mats, etc.
Any yarn or hook will work, depending on the desired size of the finished square. I used yarn weight of 4 with a 5.5 hook, which creates a square of 13.5” x 13”. You will need approximately 4 oz of yarn total for this size.
There is some color switching in this project if you do the example image, which will be included in the instructions. The odd # rows include the background, hand color, and eye white & iris. The even # rows include the border, the blue squigglies in the background area, the black outlines, and the lotus in the center.
I have a helpful youtube video link in the pattern PDF to show how I do various color switching transitions, although it’s using a different pattern but the concepts are the same.
Pattern is in US crochet terms.
Zen Garden Mosaic Square – Hamsa Hand Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Zen Garden Mosaic Square – Hamsa Hand is a decorative crochet square featuring a hamsa hand design created using mosaic crochet techniques. This intermediate-level project combines traditional crochet with mosaic methods to produce a finished piece with interesting shapes and textured visual appeal. The square format makes it suitable for use in larger afghans, blankets, or as a standalone decorative item.
Craft and Primary Technique
This pattern is designed for crochet and utilizes mosaic crochet as its primary construction method. Mosaic crochet is a technique that creates intricate patterns and designs by strategically carrying yarn colors and working through specific stitches to build up images and shapes within the fabric. According to the pattern notes, mosaic crochet allows crafters to create really interesting shapes and texture in a crochet project, though reading graph charts for this technique can initially seem confusing. The designer, Cyndie Birdsong, has created this pattern with the goal of making mosaic crochet more accessible and easier to follow.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided content, mosaic crochet patterns typically employ fundamental crochet stitches combined with color-carrying techniques to achieve the final design. The pattern includes graph charts to guide stitch placement and color changes needed to render the hamsa hand motif accurately. Cyndie Birdsong has created supplementary instructional content, including a how-to video on YouTube demonstrating favorite techniques used in similar patterns, which may be helpful for understanding the stitch concepts applied in this square.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Zen Garden Mosaic Square – Hamsa Hand pattern is worked using aran or worsted weight yarn. These yarn weights are medium-thickness options that work well for creating defined stitch definition and clear pattern visibility in mosaic crochet designs. The pattern will require an appropriate crochet hook sized for the yarn weight chosen, along with multiple yarn colors to execute the mosaic technique and create the hamsa hand design.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic crochet stitches and are ready to explore more advanced techniques like mosaic crochet. The intermediate classification reflects the skill required to accurately read and follow graph charts while managing color changes and maintaining consistent tension throughout the project.
