Product Description
A few months ago, my husband and I got to visit Guadalajara for a friend’s wedding. While we were there, we stayed in the neighborhood called Zapopan. It felt like we were in the heart of the city where we got to experience all the richness of the culture and busy-ness of the city. This beanie is reminiscent of the busy, yet beautiful, experience we had during our stay there. I like to picture a local wearing this beanie while going about her day in Zapopan.

What is Being Made
The Zapopan Slouchy Beanie is a knitted hat designed to capture the vibrant spirit of Guadalajara's Zapopan neighborhood. This beanie features a relaxed, slouchy fit that drapes comfortably on the head, making it an ideal accessory for transitional seasons including spring, fall, and cool summer evenings. The design celebrates the rich cultural experience and dynamic energy of the city through its intricate stitch patterns.
Knitting Techniques Used
This beanie is constructed using circular needles, which significantly reduces finishing work after completion compared to flat knitting methods. The construction method allows for seamless knitting in the round, creating a continuous fabric without the need for seaming. The pattern employs a strategic combination of stitch techniques to build visual interest and texture throughout the hat's body.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The body of the Zapopan Slouchy Beanie features two alternating stitch patterns that work together to create the finished design:
- Lace Chevron Pattern: This openwork stitch creates delicate, angled lines that form a chevron or zigzag visual effect, adding an elegant and airy quality to the beanie
- Broken Seed Stitch: This textured stitch provides visual contrast to the lace sections, creating a broken, scattered texture that complements the chevron pattern
The alternation between these two stitches builds a dynamic, layered appearance while maintaining structural integrity throughout the hat.
Materials and Tools
The Zapopan Slouchy Beanie requires worsted weight yarn and specific needle sizes to achieve the correct gauge and drape:
- Yarn: Approximately 70 yards of Lion Brand Vanna's or Lion Brand Heartland in Grand Canyon colorway
- Needles: US 7 circular needles (16 inches), US 9 circular needles (16 inches), and US 9 double-pointed needles for crown shaping
- Notions: Stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping
The combination of different needle sizes allows for gauge changes and creates the slouchy silhouette, while the double-pointed needles accommodate the crown decreases as the hat is finished.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with some experience. The combination of lace chevron and broken seed stitch patterns requires familiarity with reading stitch patterns and managing multiple techniques, though the worsted weight yarn and straightforward construction provide manageable complexity.
