Product Description
Legends of Rock Pattern #6 - inspired by Rush
YYZ (the cowl) is a continuous narrow strip of cables creating the Morse Code pattern for YYZ. It loops around and you join it onto itself as you work.
The cable pattern is both written and charted. A photo tutorial is included in the pattern for joining the cowl onto itself as you work.
YYZ Cowl by Laurie Beardsley
Design Inspiration and Concept
YYZ is a knitted cowl inspired by the iconic Rush instrumental of the same name. The design references the Morse Code identifier for Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), which is transmitted continuously on a specific radio frequency for approaching aircraft. Geddy Lee and Neil Peart famously heard this rhythmic transmission while flying into Toronto on a small aircraft and incorporated it into their most popular instrumental composition. This cowl translates that same Morse Code pattern into a continuous narrow strip of cables that wraps around the neck.
Construction Method and Technique
YYZ is constructed as a continuous narrow strip of cables that loops around and joins onto itself as you work. This innovative construction method means you are continuously knitting the cable pattern in the round, creating a seamless cowl without traditional bind-off and seaming steps. The cable work forms the visual representation of the YYZ Morse Code pattern throughout the piece.
Stitches and Cable Work
The primary stitch technique used in this design is cable knitting. The cowl features a continuous cable pattern that creates strong stitch definition and visual interest. Cable stitches are formed by crossing groups of stitches over each other using a cable needle, creating the characteristic twisted rope-like texture. The gauge for this project is 26 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in the cable pattern. While gauge is not critical for this design, variations in gauge will affect the total yarn yardage required and the overall size and drape of the finished cowl.
Finished Dimensions
The completed YYZ cowl measures 8 inches (20 cm) wide and 25 inches (63.5 cm) in circumference, making it a comfortable neckwear piece suitable for wrapping around the neck once or twice depending on personal preference and sizing.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This intermediate-level knitting project requires the following materials:
- Yarn: 250 yards (230 meters) of DK weight yarn. The pattern recommends using any DK weight yarn that will show stitch definition clearly. The sample shown was knitted in one skein of Dye2Spin Merino DK, which is 100% superwash merino fiber, providing durability and easy care.
- Needles: US 6 (4 mm) needles appropriate for working DK weight yarn
- Additional tools: Cable needle for crossing stitches, tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and blocking supplies to finish and set the cable pattern
Yarn Weight and Fiber Considerations
DK weight yarn is a medium-light yarn weight that works well for creating stitch definition in cable patterns. The superwash merino fiber suggested in the pattern sample offers excellent stitch clarity, allowing the intricate cable work and Morse Code pattern to be clearly visible. Any DK weight yarn with good stitch definition will work for this project, giving knitters flexibility in fiber choice while maintaining the intended appearance and drape of the finished cowl.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience. Cable knitting requires familiarity with using a cable needle and understanding how to cross stitches, but the continuous construction method and relatively straightforward pattern make it an accessible intermediate project for those ready to move beyond basic stockinette stitch work.
