Product Description
Youlia VF Socks by L Rose
What is Being Made
The Youlia VF is a pair of knitted socks designed using a toe-up construction method. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating socks with contrasting color work, featuring a two-tone design with a main color for the foot and calf sections, and a contrasting color for the toe, heel, and ankle cuff.
Construction Method and Techniques
This sock pattern employs the toe-up construction technique, meaning knitting begins at the toe and progresses upward toward the calf. The pattern utilizes Judy's magic cast on as the cast-on method, which is a specialized technique ideal for creating seamless toe increases in sock knitting. The two-color design is achieved through strategic yarn color placement rather than complex colorwork stitching, making it accessible for intermediate-level knitters.
The pattern incorporates cable techniques, requiring a cable needle for creating textured stitch patterns throughout the sock. Stitch markers are essential for tracking pattern repeats and construction points, with the pattern referencing M1 and M2 marker placements.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
While the PDF content references pattern sections and stitch markers, the specific stitch patterns are detailed within the full pattern instructions. The sock construction includes standard sock stitches combined with cable work elements, creating visual interest beyond basic stockinette stitch.
Materials Required
- Yarn: Two colors of 4-ply or fingering/sock weight yarn. Main color: 1 skein (100 gr) for the foot and calf sections. Contrasting color: 1 skein (50 gr) for the toe, heel, and ankle cuff border. The designer used Fairy Sardine by Mon Sheep Shop (100 gr fingering weight) for the main color and Drops Fabel (50 gr) in blue for the contrasting color.
- Needles: 2.5 mm circular needles in small circumference size, and/or 2.5 mm double-pointed needles (20 cm length)
- Cable Needle: 2.5 mm cable needle for cable stitch work
- Notions: 2 stitch markers (referenced as M1 and M2 in the pattern), tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and scissors
Gauge and Difficulty Level
The pattern specifies a gauge of 30 stitches by 44 rows over a 10 cm x 10 cm swatch in stockinette stitch. This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle toe-up construction, cable techniques, and two-color sock design.
