DESCRIPTION

“You made that?” is going to be the question you get asked every time you wear this hat. Move over high end stores, you’re taking over! I am so excited to say that this pattern was inspired by my best friend Nicole of Woolfield Studio’s Moonstone Mittens (in last photo). Note: This hat is knit in round with the brim on the smaller needles, and the body on the larger. This pattern is for personal use only.

DIFFICULTY Intermediate You will need to know how to cast on, knit stitch, purl stitch, decrease, slip stitches, work in the round, pick up stitches and bind off.

This pattern is a copywrite of Chantal Miyagishima of Knitatude. It is for personal use only. Reselling of items made with the use of this pattern is prohibited. You Made That? Hat by Knitatude - Chantal

What is Being Made

The You Made That? Hat is a knitted beanie designed to showcase impressive handmade craftsmanship. This hat features a classic construction with a ribbed or textured brim and a stockinette stitch body, creating a polished, professional-looking accessory that rivals high-end retail pieces. The finished hat measures 8 inches in height with a 9-inch width laid flat at the brim, making it a standard adult size suitable for most wearers.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This hat is knit in the round, a fundamental circular knitting technique that eliminates the need for seaming and creates seamless, tubular garments. The construction employs a two-needle technique, utilizing smaller needles for the brim section and larger needles for the body to create intentional shaping and texture variation. The brim is worked on US 8/5mm circular needles, while the main body transitions to US 10/6mm circular needles, allowing the fabric to expand and create a comfortable fit that sits properly on the head.

Advanced stitch techniques incorporated into the pattern include slip stitches with yarn in front (WYIF), which are used to create decorative edge effects and texture. The pattern employs K2TOG (knit two together) and SSK (slip slip knit) decreases, essential techniques for shaping the crown of the hat and achieving proper fit. Additional techniques include knit one under loose strand (K1ULS), which addresses tension issues and creates neater stitches in challenging areas.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch – The primary stitch used for the hat body, created by knitting on right-side rows and purling on wrong-side rows (or alternating knit and purl rounds when working in the round). This stitch creates the smooth, classic fabric visible on finished hats.
  • Knit Stitch (K) – The foundational stitch throughout the pattern
  • Purl Stitch (P) – Used in combination with knit stitches for ribbed or textured sections
  • Slip Stitches (SL) – Including slip 5 stitches with yarn in front (SL5wyif) and slip 3 stitches with yarn in front (SL3wyif) for decorative effects
  • Decreases – K2TOG (knit two together) and SSK (slip slip knit) for shaping the crown

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The You Made That? Hat requires 100 meters (109 yards) of bulky weight yarn, classified as category 5 in the yarn weight system. Bulky weight yarn creates quick, satisfying projects and produces a dense, warm fabric ideal for winter hats. The pattern calls for two sets of US circular needles: size US 8/5mm needles measuring 16 inches long for the brim, and size US 10/6mm needles also 16 inches long for the body. Additional materials include one stitch marker for tracking round beginnings and a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 8 stitches by 10 rows equals 2 inches when measured in stockinette stitch on the 6mm needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the finished hat matches the intended dimensions and fits correctly. The finished hat dimensions are 8 inches in height and 9 inches in width when laid flat at the brim.

Difficulty Level

While the product attributes list this as a beginner project, the PDF indicates an intermediate difficulty level. This reflects the requirement for circular knitting skills, understanding of decreases for crown shaping, and familiarity with working in the round. Knitters should be comfortable with basic stitches and have experience managing stitches on circular needles before attempting this pattern.
