Yosemite Falls Cardigan by Hanna Maciejewska

What is Being Made

The Yosemite Falls Cardigan is a petite, figure-hugging cardigan designed by Hanna Maciejewska, featuring cascading wavy panels as its signature design element. This downloadable knitting pattern is available in eight sizes, ranging from 30" to 50" chest measurements (70cm to 120cm). The cardigan is intentionally designed to be worn with 2" to 2½" (5cm to 6¼cm) of negative ease, creating a fitted silhouette that flatters the wearer's form.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level knitting project employs circular knitting techniques using both 32" (80cm) and 40" (100cm) circular needles, as well as sets of five double-pointed needles (dpns) for smaller circumferences. The pattern utilizes multiple needle sizes to accommodate different stitch gauges throughout the construction. Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric base, worked at a gauge of 23 stitches and 33 rows per 4" (10cm). The defining design feature involves cascading wavy panels that create visual interest and movement across the cardigan body.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The Yosemite Falls Cardigan is primarily constructed using Stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric. The cascading wavy panels are achieved through strategic stitch manipulation and shaping techniques that create the characteristic flowing, waterfall-like visual effect that inspired the cardigan's name. Stitch markers in three different colors are used throughout construction to help track pattern repeats and increases, with removable markers providing additional flexibility during the knitting process.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern calls for Cheval Blanc Ambre, a 4-ply weight yarn composed of 70% Bamboo and 30% Cotton. This fiber blend provides breathability and drape, making it ideal for a fitted cardigan design. Yardage requirements are 50g per 164 yards (150 meters) per skein, with pattern sizes requiring between 5 and 7 skeins depending on the chosen size:

  • Sizes 30", 32", 34", and 36": 5 skeins
  • Sizes 38" and 42": 6 skeins
  • Sizes 46" and 50": 7 skeins

Needles and Notions

The pattern requires two sets of needles in different gauges to accommodate varying stitch densities. US 2 (2.75mm) needles are used for sections requiring a tighter gauge, available in both 32" (80cm) circular and dpn formats. US 2½ (3mm) needles are used for sections worked at a slightly looser gauge, also available in 32" (80cm) circular and dpn configurations. Additional notions include stitch markers in three distinct colors for pattern tracking, 6 removable markers for provisional stitches or stitch holds, 7 to 9 buttons measuring 7/16" (11mm) depending on size, a stitch holder or scrap yarn for holding live stitches, and a sewing needle with matching thread for button attachment and finishing.

Sizing and Fit

The Yosemite Falls Cardigan accommodates a wide range of body sizes with eight distinct pattern sizes. Finished chest measurements range from 28" (70cm) for the smallest size to 48" (120cm) for the largest size. The intentional negative ease of 2" to 2½" (5cm to 6¼cm) means the cardigan should be chosen one to two sizes smaller than typical ready-to-wear sizing to achieve the designed fitted aesthetic.
