Product Description

Yin and Yang (or his and hers!?) are two patterns in one. One is knitted straight with a slit for the thumb (brown version in Sirdar Chunky with Wool) - this is the easier version and is for those who are not confident enough to use double pointed needles. The other is knitted in the round with a true thumb (cream version in Rowan Alpaca Cotton). The cable pattern is a mirror image between left and right mitts, so the pattern instructions are written for each mitt separately. Instructions are given so that you can increase the length of them if you wish.

Yin and Yang Fingerless Mitts by Agrarian Artisan

What Is Being Made

The Yin and Yang Fingerless Mitts are a coordinating pair of hand coverings designed by Agrarian Artisan. This downloadable knitting pattern includes two distinct mitten styles that work together as a complementary set. One mitt features a thumb slit design (referred to as the brown mitts), while the second mitt is knitted in the round with a constructed thumb opening (the cream mitts). Both mitts are fingerless, leaving the fingers exposed for dexterity while providing warmth to the hand and wrist area. The pattern is suitable for intermediate-level knitters.

Design and Construction Techniques

The Yin and Yang Fingerless Mitts showcase a thoughtful construction approach that ensures the left and right mitts are exact mirror images of one another. The pattern employs two different knitting methods to achieve the thumb openings: one mitt uses a straightforward slit approach, while the other utilizes a true thumb gusset knitted in the round. This dual-method approach adds visual and structural interest to the finished pair.

The overall design combines textural elements through the use of moss stitch paired with a nine-stitch cable panel. This combination creates visual depth and dimension while maintaining the intermediate difficulty level appropriate for knitters with foundational skills.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k) – the fundamental stitch creating the base fabric
  • Purl (p) – used in moss stitch and cable crossing sequences
  • Make One (m1) – an increase stitch created by picking up the horizontal thread before the next stitch, placing it on the left needle, and knitting into the back of it
  • Cable Crosses:
    • Cr3L – slip 2 stitches onto cable needle, hold at front, purl 1, knit 2 from cable needle
    • Cr3R – slip 1 stitch onto cable needle, hold at back, knit 2, purl 1 from cable needle
    • C4F – slip 2 stitches onto cable needle, hold at front, knit 2, knit 2 from cable needle
    • C4B – slip 2 stitches onto cable needle, hold at back, knit 2, knit 2 from cable needle
  • Purl 2 Together (p2tog) – a decrease stitch
  • Marker Placement (pm) – place marker to denote pattern sections
  • Slip Marker (sm) – slip marker to maintain pattern alignment

Moss Stitch and Cable Panel

Moss stitch forms the textural foundation of these mitts, creating a subtle, bumpy fabric that provides both visual interest and structural stability. The nine-stitch cable panel adds a more pronounced three-dimensional element, with the cable crosses creating twisted rope-like columns that run vertically along the mitt. The combination of these two stitch patterns—the understated moss stitch and the bold cable work—creates a balanced, sophisticated design.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Yin and Yang Fingerless Mitts are designed to be knitted with aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that works well for creating structured, durable garments with good stitch definition. Aran weight yarn allows the cable and moss stitch patterns to show clearly while providing adequate warmth. The pattern requires knitting needles appropriate for aran weight yarn, though the specific needle size and total yardage requirements are detailed within the full downloadable PDF pattern.

Pattern Format

This is a downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Agrarian Artisan, making it accessible for immediate download and printing. The pattern includes comprehensive abbreviations and detailed instructions to guide knitters through both mitt variations.
