Product Description
Yarden (pronounced yar-dén) is a lace and stockinette stitch shawl that gets its wavy lines from increases and decreases in the lace sections. It begins with a garter stitch tab and is worked from the top down making it an easy shawl to enlarge by working additional repeats of the lace and stockinette stitch stripes. The pattern includes instructions for both fingering and sport weight yarns, but you could work this in any weight yarn.
Actual yardage used is approximately 420 [340] yards MC and 210 [165] yards CC. If you use tosh merino light, it's a good idea to have a second skein or some additional yardage of the main color.
Pattern is charted.
Yarden Knit Shawl by Nancy Whitman
What Is Being Made
Yarden is a downloadable knitting pattern for a triangular shawl designed by Nancy Whitman. This intermediate-level project creates a generous wrap suitable for layering or wearing as a statement piece. The finished shawl features a wide neck edge and moderate center depth, making it a versatile accessory for various occasions and seasons.
Finished Dimensions
- Neck edge width: approximately 58 inches (with a 56-inch alternative sizing option)
- Center depth: approximately 24 inches (with a 21-inch alternative sizing option)
Techniques Used
The Yarden shawl employs several intermediate knitting techniques that build shaping and visual interest throughout the construction. The pattern incorporates Make One increases worked in multiple directions to create strategic shaping. These increases include Make One Right (MR), Make One Left (ML), and Make One Right Purl (MRP) variations, which are worked by lifting the strand running between needles and knitting or purling through different loops to twist the new stitch and avoid creating visible holes.
These directional increase methods allow the designer to control the shawl's geometry and create a balanced, professional-looking finished piece. The combination of these techniques demonstrates intermediate-level skill, as knitters must understand how different increase methods affect fabric appearance and drape.
Yarn and Materials
The Yarden pattern is designed for 4-ply weight yarn, which provides excellent stitch definition and drape suitable for shawl construction. The original pattern calls for luxury fiber content:
- Main Color (MC): Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light, 100% superwash Merino wool, 420 yards per skein—1 skein required
- Contrast Color (CC): Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light, 100% superwash Merino wool, 420 yards per skein—1 skein required
An alternative yarn option is listed as Madelinetosh Tosh Pashmina (75% Merino, 15% silk, 10% cashmere blend, 360 yards per skein), which offers a luxurious fiber blend with enhanced softness and drape. The superwash treatment on the Merino options ensures easy care and durability.
Pattern Format
This is a downloadable PDF pattern provided by independent designer Nancy Whitman. The pattern document spans 7 pages and includes comprehensive instructions, schematic measurements, and detailed stitch explanations suitable for intermediate knitters seeking to expand their technical skills.
